Characteristics
A spreading deciduous shrub with dense, tiered branching and almost horizontally extending shoots, in old age nearly as wide as it is tall; it most often reaches 1.5–3 m, while old specimens grow to about 4 m in height. Its most easily recognizable feature is the corky wings: the young shoots are four-angled and develop two or four longitudinal corky growths along their edges, up to about 5 mm wide and 1–2 mm thick. This is not, however, a feature exclusive to this species — among the spindles available in Polish nurseries, corky wings are also found on the corkbark spindle (Euonymus phellomanus), likewise native to China; in that species the corky growths are distinctly broader and thicker, and the shrub reaches 2–4 m in height with a width of about 2.5 m. The wings are best seen on young twigs and remain ornamental on the shrub in winter, after the leaves have fallen. The leaves are obovate to obovate-elliptic, 4.5–10 cm long and 2–4 cm wide, with a finely crenate margin, matte green in summer. In autumn they turn an intense scarlet — the colour develops most strongly in a full-sun position, whereas in partial shade it tends to be paler, pinkish, and appears later. The flowers are inconspicuous: four-parted, greenish-yellow, a few millimetres across, gathered in ones to threes in small cymes; they open in May and June and are easily overlooked. The fruit is a reddish capsule deeply divided into one to four parts, 7–8 mm long, splitting open in autumn to reveal seeds surrounded by an orange-red aril. The shrub grows slowly — according to the RHS it reaches its final height only after 10–20 years, which makes it a plant that requires patience but is also very stable in a composition.
Popular cultivars
- ‘Compactus’
- The most commonly encountered cultivar in the trade. More compact and lower than the typical form — sources give from 1.2 to 3 m, depending on age and conditions. Its corky wings on the shoots are as a rule less well developed than in the species, which can be a surprise when buying a 'winged spindle' precisely for this feature.
- ‘Fire Ball’
- Trade name of a cultivar with the epithet Select. A compact, rounded shrub growing, according to the breeder, to about 1.5–2.1 m in height and the same in width, selected for frost hardiness (zones 4–8) and an even, intensely red autumn colour.
- ‘Rudy Haag’
- A dwarf and very slow-growing cultivar, reaching about 0.9–1.5 m. Because of its size and growth rate it is recommended for small gardens, borders, and plantings by a terrace, where the typical form would be too large.
Growing and care
Watering
Once established it withstands periodic drought well and does not require regular watering. The key is to avoid standing water — in constantly wet soil the shrub is prone to dieback of the shoots.
Fertilizing
Undemanding — a layer of compost around the shrub in early spring is enough. An excess of nitrogen, especially in the second half of summer, stimulates late growth and delays the autumn colouring of the leaves.
Planting
It tolerates a wide range of soils, including calcareous and clay, provided drainage is good. The autumn effect depends on the position: full sun gives the most intense scarlet leaf colour.
Pruning
The shrub has a naturally regular, tiered habit and needs little pruning — usually sanitary pruning and the removal of shoots that disturb its shape are enough. Specimens trained as an informal hedge can additionally be shortened once growth has finished.

Diseases and pests
Immobile, brown or yellowish shields (1-4 mm) attached to stems and the underside of leaves, especially along the veins. Easily mistaken for growths on the plant. They suck sap, causing yellowing and weakening, and excrete sticky honeydew. Common on figs, orchids and plants with tough leaves. The collective name covers two groups with different biology. Armoured scales (Diaspididae) have a hard waxy shield separate from the body, which can be prised off - beneath it emerges a tiny, legless and wingless female; they do not excrete honeydew. Soft scales (Coccidae) have a convex, cup-shaped cover fused with the body, and it is they that excrete it abundantly. Sticky honeydew - the domain of soft scales and other honeydew-producing scale insects, not of armoured scales - settles on the leaves and attracts sooty mould fungi (sooty mould, sooty blotch) as well as ants, which defend the colony against predators. The only mobile feeding stage is the crawler - a flat, tiny larva which, after hatching from beneath the mother's shield, disperses over the plant, then settles, inserts its stylet into the conducting tissues and loses the ability to move; adult females remain immobile for the rest of their lives. Males pupate and, as tiny, winged, short-lived insects, do not feed. In heated interiors the pest breeds all year round, producing several overlapping generations; outdoors usually 1-3 generations, and fertilised females or eggs hidden beneath the shield overwinter. Feeding symptoms are yellowing and premature leaf drop, dieback of shoots, stunting and weakening of the plant, and secondarily a black coating of sooty mould on leaves covered with honeydew. On fruit trees infested by San Jose scale (Comstockaspis perniciosa), reddish discolouration appears around the feeding sites, and heavily colonised branches die back. Because the shields are immobile and their colour blends into the bark and veins, an infestation is easily overlooked until honeydew appears or the plant is noticeably weakened - which is why regular inspection of the leaf undersides and shoot axils is key.
Spider mitesTiny (0.3–0.5 mm) arachnids, hard to spot with the naked eye, feeding on the underside of leaves. Symptoms: fine, pale speckling (feeding punctures); over time the leaves turn grey, yellow and dry out. Under heavy infestation a fine webbing becomes visible. Warm, dry air favours their development — a common problem for houseplants in winter near radiators. Spider mites are not insects but mites of the family Tetranychidae — adults have 8 legs (larvae only 6). The most common in cultivation is the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae): yellowish-green females carry two dark spots on the sides of the body, while overwintering females turn orange-red. In orchards the fruit tree red spider mite (Panonychus ulmi) is frequent, whose red eggs overwinter in clusters on the bark of the shoots. Feeding mechanism: the mites puncture the cells of the epidermis and mesophyll on the underside of the leaf and suck out their contents, and the emptied cells fill with air — hence the characteristic, silvery-grey, fine speckling visible from the upper side of the blade (resembling a mosaic discolouration). At high numbers the leaves turn brown, curl and drop prematurely, and the whole plant weakens and loses its growth. Dense webbing spun between the leaves and shoot tips appears only under an advanced attack and is a sign of the risk of the pest spreading to neighbouring plants. The development cycle is very fast in warmth and drought — at a temperature of 25–30°C a single generation can be completed in 1–2 weeks, hence the numerous generations per season and the rapid, exponential build-up of the population. Females lay spherical, transparent eggs on the underside of the leaves. Fertilised females overwinter (in bark crevices, leaf litter and plant debris) or — in the fruit tree red spider mite — the eggs on the bark. Early infestation is easy to miss; diagnosis is helped by shaking a leaf over a white sheet of paper (moving specks become visible) or examining the underside of the leaf with a magnifying glass.

History and origin
The species was described in 1784 by Carl Peter Thunberg as Celastrus alatus, based on material from Japan; it was transferred to the genus Euonymus in the 19th century by Philipp Franz von Siebold, hence the full name Euonymus alatus (Thunb.) Siebold. The winged spindle was brought to North America in the 1860s and quickly gained popularity thanks to its regular habit, corky shoots, and exceptionally intense autumn red. That same ease of cultivation, however, proved a problem: birds eat the fruit and disperse the seeds, so the species escaped from gardens and became established in at least 21 states of the eastern and central United States. In recent decades it has ended up there on invasive-plant lists, and its sale has been banned in, among others, Massachusetts (as of 1 January 2009) and New Hampshire; in further states, for example New York and Maryland, sale restrictions apply. In Central Europe the species does not show such expansiveness and remains a widely available, safe ornamental plant, planted chiefly for its autumn colour effect.
Uses
In gardens it is planted above all as a specimen shrub showcased for autumn — a single plant against a lawn, a dark coniferous hedge, or a wall gives the strongest colour effect. It also works well in groups and in informal hedges and screens, where the dense, tiered branching forms a compact wall without the need for annual clipping. It combines well with ornamental grasses and perennials with persistent shoot structure, and in winter the corky wings, clearly visible after the leaves have fallen, are a value in their own right. In parks and larger plantings it is sometimes planted in rows along walkways, where its slow growth keeps maintenance costs down. Because of the toxicity of the fruit, it is worth considering a location away from playgrounds and animal runs.
Trivia
- There is a wingless form of the species — Euonymus alatus f. apterus, described in 1861 — with shoots lacking the corky wings. Without this feature the shrub loses its easiest identification key and is sometimes confused with other spindles.
- The English common name 'burning bush', referring to the autumn colour of the leaves, can be misleading — the same term is used in gardening literature for the gas plant (Dictamnus albus), a plant of an entirely different habit.
- The seeds are surrounded by an orange-red aril — a fleshy coat that attracts birds. It is responsible both for the ornamental quality of the fruit and for the effective dispersal of the species far beyond its place of cultivation.

Why isn't my winged spindle turning red?
The most common cause is too little light — the shrub develops its full, scarlet colour only in full sun, whereas in partial shade the leaves take on only a pale pink shade and do so later. When and how should I prune the winged spindle?

Fortune's spindle is evergreen, low and creeping or climbing, grown above all for its year-round variegated leaves. Only the winged spindle has corky wings on its shoots.

No — in Poland it is widely and safely grown as an ornamental plant. The status of an invasive species applies to the eastern and central United States, where birds intensively disperse the seeds into forests and along field margins, and in some states a sale ban is in force.
