Symptoms
Dark brown spots with a more distinct, darker margin appear on boxwood leaves and quickly merge together. On the green stems, black streaks and elongated marks are the characteristic symptom by which the disease is easily recognised. Infected leaves rapidly turn brown and drop en masse, leaving bare stems, and in humid conditions a whitish coating of spores appears on the underside of the leaves. The disease spreads very quickly and can destroy entire boxwood hedges in a short time. The spots usually begin as lighter, straw-brown round discolourations that darken over time and cover the whole leaf blade; they are sometimes concentrically zoned. The most decisive diagnostic feature is precisely the black, line-like streaks running along the green, one-year-old shoots — it is these that distinguish this disease from other causes of boxwood browning. The whitish coating on the underside of the leaves is a mass of the fungus's conidial spores (visible to the naked eye or through a hand lens as a fine, white down), appearing only under high humidity and long-lasting water on the leaves. Leaf drop can be so rapid that the leaves fall while still partly green, and within a few days the shrub can go bare in patches. The disease usually progresses from the lower and inner, poorly ventilated parts of the shrub upwards and outwards. The optimum for development is warmth (about 20–25°C) combined with several hours of leaf wetness; in dry weather the infection halts, though the fungus survives as resting microsclerotia in fallen leaves and the surface layer of the soil for several years.
Treatment
Infected shoots and leaves, including those that have fallen, must be carefully removed and destroyed (burned or thrown out with waste, not composted) to limit the source of spores. It is worth improving air circulation within the planting by thinning and avoiding leaf wetting when watering, as the fungus develops only in moisture. Fungicides are used preventively, before symptoms appear, since they no longer cure already infected tissue. Carry out sanitary pruning into healthy wood, below the visible symptoms, and remove the collected debris from the garden immediately — do not leave it under the shrub, because the spores are sticky and spread mainly with splashing water rather than by wind over long distances. Also collect the surface layer of infected litter and fallen leaves from under the shrub, where microsclerotia can survive for several seasons. Disinfect tools (secateurs, hedge shears) between plants, and preferably between cuts, because the spores transfer easily onto blades, hands and clothing; avoid working on wet shrubs. In chemical protection, contact fungicides (a protective barrier on the leaves) are combined with systemic ones (penetrating into the tissue), applied alternately to reduce the risk of resistance — always preventively, during periods of warm humidity. With severe, recurring infection, especially under conditions of high humidity, the most reliable solution is often to remove and replace the plants with a non-susceptible species.
Prevention
Planting more resistant species and cultivars and replacing boxwood with other hedging plants in areas of high disease pressure. New young plants should be quarantined and observed before being added to existing plantings, because the disease most often reaches the garden with infected nursery stock. As an alternative to boxwood for clipped hedges and topiary balls, use Japanese holly (Ilex crenata), wintercreeper (Euonymus fortunei) or honeysuckle (Lonicera nitida) — of similar habit but not susceptible to this fungus. Among boxwoods themselves, some cultivars (including within Buxus microphylla and selected selections of B. sempervirens) show greater tolerance, but none is fully resistant, so on their own they will not replace preventive measures. Water at the base of the shrub (preferably by drip), in the morning, so that the leaves have time to dry, and never by spraying over the whole plant. Give the plants spacing and air circulation that limit prolonged leaf wetness, plan pruning for dry weather, and disinfect tools. Mulching reduces the splashing of spores from the soil onto the lower leaves. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilisation, which stimulates soft, especially vulnerable growth. Inspect hedges regularly, especially after warm and rainy periods, to catch the first outbreaks before they spread.
