Characteristics
An evergreen, dense shrub with small, oval, leathery, dark green leaves. It grows slowly and tolerates shaping well, allowing it to maintain a crisp, geometric form. The leaves are borne in opposite pairs, usually 1.5-3 cm long, with entire margins, often shallowly notched at the tip and distinctly paler underneath. The opposite leaf arrangement and the green, four-angled young shoots are the most reliable identification features; with age the bark turns grey and finely fissured. The flowers are inconspicuous: petal-less, greenish-cream, gathered in the leaf axils in clusters made up of a single female flower surrounded by several male ones. They open in early spring and are easily overlooked - bees do visit them as an early but meagre source of forage. The fruit is a three-parted capsule tipped with three small horns, which splits open when ripe and ejects shiny black seeds. Annual growth is usually somewhere between ten and twenty centimetres - the plant rebuilds its mass slowly, but keeping the crisp line of a formal hedge normally calls for two cuts per season: in late spring and again in summer. The root system is dense and shallow. Boxwood is among the most shade-tolerant evergreen broadleaf shrubs - it grows in full sun as well as in deep shade, although in shade the foliage is looser and the shoots longer. It does best in fertile, well-drained soil with a neutral to alkaline reaction (pH 6.5-7.5); it copes poorly with waterlogging and with heavy, cold sites.

- ‘Suffruticosa’
- The classic edging boxwood. It grows extremely slowly, forms a very fine, compact mass, and rarely exceeds 1 m. The material of historic parterres, but reputed to be the most susceptible to boxwood blight: the very dense foliage holds moisture inside the plant for a long time, which favours the fungus.
- ‘Rotundifolia’
- A vigorous cultivar with the largest leaves among common boxwood cultivars - rounded and blue-green. It reaches 3-4 m and suits taller hedges and standard forms; thanks to its vigour it rebuilds its mass after cutting faster than the edging cultivars.
- ‘Elegantissima’
- A variegated cultivar: leaves with an irregular creamy-white margin. It grows slowly and forms a dense, dome-shaped mass of its own accord, ultimately 1.5-2 m. It brightens shaded corners, but the paler leaves scorch more easily - most often in winter sun, when the frozen root ball cannot replace the lost water.
- ‘Blauer Heinz’
- A German selection with stiff, upright shoots and distinctly blue-green leaves. Compact and low (0.6-1 m), valued for precise edging and parterre patterns. It takes frost well, but the very dense mass dries out poorly, which is why the cultivar is regarded as susceptible to boxwood blight.
- ‘Handsworthiensis’
- A strong-growing, upright cultivar with large, thick, dark green leaves. It reaches several metres, staying within the height range given for the species, and forms a dense, opaque hedge; it is considered one of the toughest against frost, wind, and air pollution.

Diseases and pests
Dark brown spots with a more distinct, darker margin appear on boxwood leaves and quickly merge together. On the green stems, black streaks and elongated marks are the characteristic symptom by which the disease is easily recognised. Infected leaves rapidly turn brown and drop en masse, leaving bare stems, and in humid conditions a whitish coating of spores appears on the underside of the leaves. The disease spreads very quickly and can destroy entire boxwood hedges in a short time. The spots usually begin as lighter, straw-brown round discolourations that darken over time and cover the whole leaf blade; they are sometimes concentrically zoned. The most decisive diagnostic feature is precisely the black, line-like streaks running along the green, one-year-old shoots — it is these that distinguish this disease from other causes of boxwood browning. The whitish coating on the underside of the leaves is a mass of the fungus's conidial spores (visible to the naked eye or through a hand lens as a fine, white down), appearing only under high humidity and long-lasting water on the leaves. Leaf drop can be so rapid that the leaves fall while still partly green, and within a few days the shrub can go bare in patches. The disease usually progresses from the lower and inner, poorly ventilated parts of the shrub upwards and outwards. The optimum for development is warmth (about 20–25°C) combined with several hours of leaf wetness; in dry weather the infection halts, though the fungus survives as resting microsclerotia in fallen leaves and the surface layer of the soil for several years.
Spider mitesTiny (0.3–0.5 mm) arachnids, hard to spot with the naked eye, feeding on the underside of leaves. Symptoms: fine, pale speckling (feeding punctures); over time the leaves turn grey, yellow and dry out. Under heavy infestation a fine webbing becomes visible. Warm, dry air favours their development — a common problem for houseplants in winter near radiators. Spider mites are not insects but mites of the family Tetranychidae — adults have 8 legs (larvae only 6). The most common in cultivation is the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae): yellowish-green females carry two dark spots on the sides of the body, while overwintering females turn orange-red. In orchards the fruit tree red spider mite (Panonychus ulmi) is frequent, whose red eggs overwinter in clusters on the bark of the shoots. Feeding mechanism: the mites puncture the cells of the epidermis and mesophyll on the underside of the leaf and suck out their contents, and the emptied cells fill with air — hence the characteristic, silvery-grey, fine speckling visible from the upper side of the blade (resembling a mosaic discolouration). At high numbers the leaves turn brown, curl and drop prematurely, and the whole plant weakens and loses its growth. Dense webbing spun between the leaves and shoot tips appears only under an advanced attack and is a sign of the risk of the pest spreading to neighbouring plants. The development cycle is very fast in warmth and drought — at a temperature of 25–30°C a single generation can be completed in 1–2 weeks, hence the numerous generations per season and the rapid, exponential build-up of the population. Females lay spherical, transparent eggs on the underside of the leaves. Fertilised females overwinter (in bark crevices, leaf litter and plant debris) or — in the fruit tree red spider mite — the eggs on the bark. Early infestation is easy to miss; diagnosis is helped by shaking a leaf over a white sheet of paper (moving specks become visible) or examining the underside of the leaf with a magnifying glass.
Box tree mothBright green caterpillars with a black head, black dots and dark longitudinal stripes along the body, growing to 4–5 cm. They feed inside a webbing of dense, white threads, eating the leaves and gnawing the bark of the shoots, so that they can strip the shrub completely bare. An infested box leaves behind characteristic webbing, greenish droppings and dry leaf remains. The adult moth has white wings with a broad brown border and a wingspan of about 4 cm. As an invasive species it produces 2–3 generations per season, so feeding can continue from spring until autumn. The female lays pale yellow eggs in flat, overlapping (roof-tile-like) clusters on the underside of the leaves, usually deep inside the shrub. The youngest caterpillars scrape away only the lower skin and mesophyll of the leaf (leaving transparent 'windows' and a skeleton of veins), older ones eat whole leaf blades, and when leaves run out they gnaw the green bark of the shoots — such ringing leads to the dieback of entire twigs. The pupae sit in white webbing between the leaves and twigs. Young caterpillars overwinter hidden in cocoons (so-called hibernaria) in the dense interior of the shrub and become active as early as early spring, before any symptoms are visible from the outside. Alongside the typical form there is a rarer dark (melanistic) form of the moth, with almost entirely brown wings bearing a light spot on the forewing. From a distance an infested box looks parched and faded — it turns brown, and between the shoots a white webbing with trapped greenish droppings is visible. The species originates from East Asia and has spread across Europe since about 2007, recorded in Poland since about 2012; it has no natural enemies here able to limit its numbers, hence the sudden, invasive nature of the damage.

History and origin
Boxwood has been used in formal gardens since Roman times. In Renaissance and Baroque French and Italian gardens, it became the foundation of parterres, mazes, and the art of topiary. The species is native to Western and Southern Europe, north-western Africa, and western Asia; natural boxwood thickets and woodlands survive in southern France, Spain, Switzerland, and along the upper Rhine, among other places. The Romans knew the art of clipping shrubs (ars topiaria) and planted boxwood in their villa gardens - Pliny the Younger describes this in his letters. In the 16th and 17th centuries boxwood became the material of embroidered parterres (parterre de broderie), and the gardens of Versailles designed by Andre Le Notre spread this model across Europe. It probably reached Poland by way of monastery gardens, and the fashion for formal gardens carried it into manor and churchyard grounds, where boxwood edging marked out beds of herbs and vegetables. In the 21st century, historic parterres in Europe are in places being replanted with substitute species - the reason is fungal boxwood blight and the box tree moth invasion, which can destroy plantings several generations old in a very short time.
Uses
For low hedges, border edging, topiary figures, and container growing. A classic for formal and geometric gardens. It is planted in spring (April-May) or in September. For a solid edging, set the young plants about 20 cm apart, that is 5 per running metre; for a taller hedge, 30-40 cm apart - preferably in a dug trench rather than in individual holes, because the line is then far easier to keep straight. Heavy clay must be loosened with compost before planting, as boxwood does not tolerate standing water. Shaping begins in the first year: shortening the new growth thickens the plant from the base, while postponing the first cut produces edging that is bare at the bottom. In a planting scheme boxwood acts as the skeleton - it holds the outline of a bed through winter, when perennials die back, and brings order to loose plantings. The classic combinations are boxwood with roses and lavender; today it is also readily paired with ornamental grasses, where the clipped mass contrasts with their free form. Hydrangeas need moister and more acidic soil than boxwood, so such a neighbourhood calls for separately prepared ground. It grows well in containers as balls, cones, and tiered forms by entrances and on terraces, but in a container it needs regular watering and protection of the root ball against freezing. Because of its toxicity, it should not be planted next to horse paddocks or pastures.

What can be used instead of boxwood in the garden?
Where the box tree moth or boxwood blight occurs, a similar effect of a dense, clipped mass can be achieved with Japanese holly (Ilex crenata), box honeysuckle (Lonicera nitida), and common yew (Taxus baccata). Ilex crenata imitates boxwood most faithfully, but it needs acidic soil, so on limy ground it will perform worse than boxwood itself, which likes such soils. Both broadleaf substitutes are also less hardy than boxwood: Ilex crenata proves reliable in practice in zones 6b-7, while Lonicera nitida is only semi-evergreen and drops its leaves after a hard winter. In colder regions yew is the safer choice, but it is strongly poisonous - more so than boxwood, and fatally so to horses and cattle - so it is unsuitable around farm animals or next to paddocks.
