The Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana) is an ornamental deciduous tree in the rose family (Rosaceae), planted almost exclusively as a street and avenue tree rather than for its fruit. Characteristics

A medium-sized tree with a dense, regular crown — broadly conical in the species, but distinctly narrowed and columnar-pyramidal in the most commonly planted cultivars. The leaves are alternate, ovate to almost round, 4–8 cm long, entire or finely crenate, with a characteristically drawn-out tip; the upper surface of the blade is dark green and glossy. This glossy leaf texture is one of the species' identifying features. In autumn they color late and strikingly — in shades of red, purple and orange — and the color persists for a long time, often into November. The flowers open very early, in April, before the leaves or at the same time as them: they are white, five-petaled, gathered into dense corymbs, and appear in enormous numbers, giving the impression of a white cloud. Their scent is sometimes perceived as unpleasant, which is a practical drawback when planting near windows. The fruit is a small, spherical, hard pome (less than 1 cm), brown and covered with pale lenticels, inedible to humans; it softens only after frost and is then eaten by birds. The Polish name "drobnoowocowa" (small-fruited) refers precisely to this miniature fruit, which distinguishes the species from the common pear. A systemic weakness of many cultivars is the narrow, sharp branch attachment angles, which with age make the crown prone to splitting during windstorms and ice loading — which is why formative pruning of young trees here has a structural, not merely aesthetic, purpose.

‘Chanticleer’
The most popular street cultivar, also sold as 'Cleveland Select'. Narrow, columnar-pyramidal crown, up to about 11 m tall and 5 m wide, with a stronger structure than 'Bradford'. Strongly glossy leaves, red-purple in autumn.
‘Bradford’
Historically the first mass-planted cultivar (introduced in 1960), with a dense, broadly oval crown. Narrow, sharp branch attachment angles make it prone to splitting at around fifteen to twenty-something years of age, which is why it is now being displaced by stronger selections.
‘Aristocrat’
A cultivar with a looser, more open crown and wider branch attachment angles than 'Bradford', making it less prone to splitting. Good, red autumn coloring.
‘Redspire’
Pyramidal crown, flowers somewhat larger and abundant; in autumn the leaves turn yellow-red. More susceptible to fire blight than some newer selections.
‘Capital’
A cultivar with a distinctly narrow, columnar crown, useful for tight street plantings. In autumn the leaves take on coppery-purple hues.

Diseases and pests

Fire blight

Blossoms and young shoots suddenly turn brown and then black, looking as if scorched by fire — hence the name of the disease. The tips of infected shoots bend downwards into a characteristic hook resembling a shepherd's crook. In humid conditions a milky, sticky bacterial ooze seeps from the infected tissue, and the infection spreads rapidly down the shoot, killing whole branches. Infected leaves and fruit dry out but remain attached to the tree for a long time. Pear and quince are the most severely affected, followed by apple, and among ornamental and wild plants — hawthorn, cotoneaster, firethorn (Pyracantha) and rowan, which can be a dangerous reservoir of infection. On the bark of the branches and trunk, sharply delimited, sunken necroses (bark canker) form with cracking bark; when the bark is cut, the tissue beneath is discoloured reddish-brown, often with marbled streaks. The drop of bacterial ooze eventually turns amber and dries, and the presence of the bacterium can be confirmed by the so-called streaming test — from freshly cut infected tissue immersed in water, threads of a cloudy bacterial suspension flow out. Infected fruit turns black and mummifies, remaining on the tree, which distinguishes fire blight from ordinary wilting caused by water shortage.

European pear rust

The disease has a two-host cycle: the pear is the main host, while juniper — especially savin and Chinese juniper, on which the fungus overwinters — is the alternate host. In spring, bright orange-red spots appear on the upper surface of pear leaves and gradually enlarge. In summer, warty, sieve-like outgrowths (aecia) that release spores develop on the underside of the leaves, opposite the spots. On juniper the fungus forms spindle-shaped swellings on the shoots, which in spring swell into gelatinous, orange outgrowths in wet weather. The spots on the upper leaf surface are initially small and yellow-green, later turning a bright orange-red with a reddish rim; at their centre, on the upper side, tiny black dots (spermogonia) are sometimes visible. The corresponding aecia on the underside take the form of light-brown, tube-like sieve-shaped outgrowths a few millimetres long, gathered in clusters — it is precisely this lattice-like arrangement that gave the disease its German name 'Birnengitterrost' (pear lattice rust). Under heavy infection there are many spots, the leaves yellow and drop prematurely, the tree weakens and yields less; occasionally spots also appear on the leaf stalks, young shoots and fruit. The cycle is strictly one-directional: in spring, in wet weather, the gelatinous outgrowths on juniper release basidiospores carried by the wind even hundreds of metres, which infect only the pear — the fungus does not spread from pear to pear, while the mature aecia on pear leaves in turn release spores that infect the juniper again, not other pears.

Aphids

Small (1–3 mm) soft-bodied insects, green, black or pink, feeding in clusters on young shoots and the underside of leaves. They excrete sticky honeydew. The diagnostic feature that distinguishes aphids from other small sucking insects is the pair of siphunculi (tubular projections) at the rear of the abdomen together with a tail-like cauda; a single colony usually holds wingless forms (parthenogenetic females) alongside winged migrants that fly onto new plants in summer. In summer aphids reproduce parthenogenetically and viviparously over many generations, so the population builds up explosively; in autumn many species produce a sexual generation that lays overwintering eggs on the host, and host-alternating species move between a winter host (often a tree or shrub) and a summer host (a herbaceous plant). Feeding symptoms include curling, crinkling and distortion of young leaves, stunted growth, yellowing, and the shedding of buds and fruitlets. Abundant honeydew coats the leaves, and the sooty mould fungus that develops on it forms a black film which limits photosynthesis; the honeydew is fed on by ants, which in return defend the colony against predators. Aphids are also important vectors of plant viruses (mosaics among them), transmitting them from plant to plant even during a brief probing puncture.

History and origin

The species was described from plants in China; the epithet calleryana commemorates Joseph Callery, a French missionary who collected plants in China in the 19th century. Pyrus calleryana entered Western horticulture on a larger scale in the early 20th century through the importation of seeds into the United States, originally intended for use as a fire-blight-resistant rootstock for cultivated pears. Its ornamental value and suitability as a street tree were soon recognized, however: in 1960 the 'Bradford' cultivar was introduced to the trade, and for decades it became one of the most widely planted urban trees in North America. Its structural weakness — a tendency to split apart at around fifteen to twenty-something years of age — later led to a wave of selections with stronger crown structure and wider branch attachment angles, such as 'Chanticleer', 'Aristocrat' and 'Redspire'. In North America the mass planting of cross-pollinating cultivars led to uncontrolled hybridization and naturalization of the species, which came to be regarded there as an invasive plant and was banned from sale in several states. In Europe and Poland the Callery pear is not treated as an invasive species and remains a valued, hardy urban greenery tree, planted mainly in the form of the 'Chanticleer' cultivar.

Uses

Its primary use is urban greenery: as an avenue tree, street tree, and for parking lots, squares and narrow planting strips, where a regular habit, resistance to drought, compacted soil and pollution, and the absence of messy, large fruit all matter. In private gardens and parks it is planted as a specimen giving an early, abundant flowering effect and strong autumn colors. Narrow-crowned cultivars, above all 'Chanticleer', work well along tight streets and on small plots, where a broadly spreading tree would not fit without conflict. It is planted in autumn (October–November) or early spring (March–April), in a sunny position or in light partial shade, at a spacing of 4–7 m in row plantings. The species tolerates a wide range of soils — from sandy to clayey, with a reaction from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline — as well as seasonal drought once established, and so it does not require careful soil preparation. The key care operation is formative pruning of young trees: establishing a single leader and removing branches with narrow, sharp attachment angles significantly reduces the risk of later crown splitting. Because of the unpleasant scent of the flowers, it is worth avoiding planting right beneath windows. The Callery pear is not a fruit tree and is not planted for a harvest.
