Caucasian rockcress (Arabis caucasica) is a low, evergreen groundcover perennial in the cabbage family that forms mats of grey-green, softly hairy leaf rosettes. In April and May it sends up erect stems bearing racemes of small, four-petalled, fragrant flowers — white in the species, and pink in some cultivars. It is planted on dry walls, banks and rock gardens, where it quickly closes over the soil surface; its densely hairy, grey-green leaves distinguish it from evergreen candytuft, which is grown in the same places. In more recent taxonomic treatments it is sometimes regarded as a subspecies of alpine rockcress — Arabis alpina subsp. caucasica.

Characteristics

Caucasian rockcress forms loose mats of trailing stems that root at the nodes and end in leaf rosettes. The rosette leaves are obovate to spatulate, edged with a few coarse teeth, grey-green and covered with a dense, soft felt of branched hairs — this indumentum gives the whole plant a matt, silvery cast and is its most reliable identifying feature, detectable even by touch. The rosettes overwinter green, so the mat stays ornamental outside the flowering season too. In spring they produce erect flowering stems 15-25 cm tall, tipped with a loose raceme that lengthens as successive flowers open. Each flower has four petals arranged in a cross — a feature of the whole cabbage family — and is white (pink in some cultivars) and distinctly fragrant. After flowering, narrow, flattened siliques set with fine seeds develop, and the plant self-sows readily from them. The clump grows to 30-45 cm wide and spreads its stems sideways, which is why it can be aggressive in a tight rock garden. The species is short-lived: after four to five years the mats usually break up and need rejuvenating by cuttings or division. It is most often confused with evergreen candytuft (Iberis sempervirens): candytuft has smooth, hairless, narrow, entire, leathery, dark-green leaves, flowers gathered into flat, shield-shaped heads, and stem bases that become woody with age. Both species begin flowering in spring, but candytuft flowers longer — it has been recorded from April into June or July. Garden aubrieta (Aubrieta x cultorum) has purple flowers and forms lower, denser cushions, basket-of-gold (Aurinia saxatilis) flowers yellow, and the closely related running rockcress (Arabis procurrens) differs in its glossy, dark-green, hairless leaves. The plant needs full sun and well-drained, stony or sandy soil with a neutral to alkaline reaction (pH around 6.5-7.5); it tolerates lime, drought and nutrient-poor sites well, but compacted, moist ground badly. Its hardiness spans zones 4a-7b, with the upper limit set not by frost but by summer heat — in a warmer climate the plants decline. In Poland, by contrast, they most often die not from frost but from standing water at the root collar during winter thaws.

Planting

Well-drained, stony or sandy soil, neutral to alkaline; on heavy clay it is essential to mix the substrate with gravel and add a mineral mulch around the root collar. In a wall crevice the root ball is pressed into a mix of soil and fine gravel.

Cut back the whole mat by one half to two thirds. The treatment thickens the plants, prevents the clump from breaking apart and limits self-seeding; the cut-off shoots are ready to use straight away as cuttings.

Root rot (Phytophthora root rot)

The disease develops in overly wet, poorly aerated substrate and attacks the roots and the base of the stem. The roots turn brown, rot and lose their bark, which slips off easily, and a dark, watery rot appears at the stem base. The above-ground part wilts, yellows and dies back despite moist soil – a characteristic symptom, because the damaged roots no longer take up water. Especially at risk are houseplants, succulents and cacti (from overwatering), and in the ground conifers, rhododendrons, ericaceous plants and strawberries on waterlogged sites. The process begins inconspicuously at the root hairs and root tips, which darken and disappear, after which the rot advances towards the framework roots and the root collar. Healthy, pale, active roots waste away — what remains is a dark, rusty-brown or blackish, watery mass, and the outer layer of the root bark slips off like a glove, exposing the discoloured central cylinder. In trees and shrubs, infection of the collar and the base of the trunk (stem-base rot) shows as a dark, often streaking patch, sometimes with oozing, and the bark there is moist and sunken; in conifers and rhododendrons, browning and dieback are seen from the bottom or from the centre of the crown while the soil is still moist. Characteristic is the nested (patchy) occurrence of symptoms in the bed — where water and the pathogen accumulate locally. It is worth distinguishing the two causal oomycete genera: Pythium mainly attacks seedlings and fine roots, causing damping-off and root rot in cool, wet substrate, whereas Phytophthora also attacks older, woody plants, framework roots and the collar, more strongly in warmer, water-saturated soil. Key for diagnosis is the contradiction of the symptoms: the plant wilts and looks 'dry', although the substrate is wet — this results from the destruction of the roots, not from a shortage of water.

Downy mildew

Yellow or angular (vein-bounded) spots on the upper leaf surface, matched underneath by a grey-violet or brown coating of spores. It differs from powdery mildew, whose white coating sits on the upper surface. It develops in humidity and cool nights and is dangerous to cucumbers, onions and grapevines. The spots are initially light green or yellowing, and their angular, mosaic-like shape arises because the pathogen's spread is halted by the larger leaf veins. The delicate, felt-like coating on the underside (hence the name 'mildew') is the sporulation of the oomycete — best seen in the morning or after a period of high air humidity. Over time the spots turn brown, dry out and merge, the leaf dies prematurely, which weakens the whole plant and lowers the yield. The disease is highly host-specialised: cucumbers and squashes are attacked by Pseudoperonospora cubensis, onion by Peronospora destructor, grapevine by Plasmopara viticola, and lettuce by Bremia lactucae — so infection of one species usually does not spread to unrelated crops.

Aphids

Small (1–3 mm) soft-bodied insects, green, black or pink, feeding in clusters on young shoots and the underside of leaves. They excrete sticky honeydew. The diagnostic feature that distinguishes aphids from other small sucking insects is the pair of siphunculi (tubular projections) at the rear of the abdomen together with a tail-like cauda; a single colony usually holds wingless forms (parthenogenetic females) alongside winged migrants that fly onto new plants in summer. In summer aphids reproduce parthenogenetically and viviparously over many generations, so the population builds up explosively; in autumn many species produce a sexual generation that lays overwintering eggs on the host, and host-alternating species move between a winter host (often a tree or shrub) and a summer host (a herbaceous plant). Feeding symptoms include curling, crinkling and distortion of young leaves, stunted growth, yellowing, and the shedding of buds and fruitlets. Abundant honeydew coats the leaves, and the sooty mould fungus that develops on it forms a black film which limits photosynthesis; the honeydew is fed on by ants, which in return defend the colony against predators. Aphids are also important vectors of plant viruses (mosaics among them), transmitting them from plant to plant even during a brief probing puncture.

Flea beetles

Tiny (1–3 mm) beetles with black, or black and yellow longitudinally striped, wing cases and strongly thickened hind femora, with which they jump away like fleas when disturbed. They attack brassicas as well as radish, rocket, Chinese cabbage and kohlrabi. Symptoms: they chew numerous small, round holes in the leaf blades like a sieve, which is especially dangerous for seedlings and young plants, whose growth heavy feeding can completely halt. They cause the greatest damage in warm, dry weather. The name 'flea beetles' covers several species of the genus Phyllotreta — on brassicas in Poland most often Phyllotreta undulata, P. atra, P. nemorum and P. nigripes. Adult beetles overwinter in the upper layer of the soil, under plant debris and in leaf litter along the edges of fields, gardens and field margins. In spring, as it warms up (activity rises markedly above about 15°C), they emerge from their hiding places and fly onto the youngest brassica plants — which is why the first flights coincide with the emergence of the vegetables. Most species have one generation per year: the females lay eggs in the soil, and the larvae feed on the roots and fine rootlets (in most Phyllotreta doing little damage; the exception is P. nemorum, whose larvae mine the leaves). A new generation of beetles appears in summer, feeds up and moves into overwintering. The characteristic damage consists of shallow feeding pits and holes 1–2 mm in diameter clustered on the upper side of the leaf; under heavy pressure the blade looks as if riddled like a sieve, browns around the wounds and dries out. Most dangerous is feeding on the cotyledons and first true leaves and on the growing point — a damaged seedling stops developing, and the wounds may become entry points for secondary infections. The beetles are most active in the sunny, warm midday; cold, rain and high humidity clearly suppress their feeding.

Slugs and snails

Slugs and shelled snails that feed at night and after rain. Symptoms: irregular holes in the leaves and young seedlings eaten off completely, silvery slime trails on leaves and soil. The greatest damage occurs in damp, shaded spots — particularly on lettuce, strawberries and hostas. The most damaging in gardens are the slugs (which lack an external shell): the Spanish slug (Arion vulgaris, formerly described as A. lusitanicus) and the grey field slug (Deroceras reticulatum). The leopard slug (Limax maximus) can be morphologically similar to them, but it feeds mainly on decaying organic matter and fungi and may even prey on other slugs, so it is of little importance as a pest of living plants. Shelled forms — grove snails (Cepaea) or the protected Roman snail (Helix pomatia) — usually cause less damage. The body is soft, elongated and permanently covered in slime; on the head there are two pairs of retractable tentacles — the longer upper pair bears the eyes, the shorter lower pair serves a tactile and olfactory function. Slugs and snails are hermaphrodites: they lay spherical, transparent or pearly eggs in clusters, hidden in damp soil, under stones and in leaf litter. A single Spanish slug can lay several hundred eggs; both eggs and young slugs overwinter, and feeding lasts from spring to late autumn, intensifying on warm, damp nights. The damage has smooth edges and often appears in the middle of the leaf blade, not only from the margin; seedlings and transplants are sometimes eaten down to bare soil, and on strawberries and ripening vegetables the slugs gnaw hollows into the fruit. The decisive diagnostic sign is the dried, silvery glistening slime trail — no insect leaves one.

History and origin

The species comes from the mountains of the Mediterranean region and Western Asia — it grows wild on limestone rocks, screes and rock swards from the Balkans and Italy to Crimea, Turkey, the Caucasus and Iran. The name Arabis caucasica is attributed to Carl Ludwig Willdenow and was published in print by Diederich Franz Leonhard von Schlechtendal — hence the full authorship written as "Willd. ex Schltdl.". Modern taxonomic treatments, including the Plants of the World Online database maintained by Kew, usually do not recognise it as a separate species but as a subspecies of alpine rockcress (Arabis alpina subsp. caucasica); in nursery practice and the garden trade, however, the shorter, traditional name has persisted. Rockcress reached gardens with the nineteenth-century fashion for alpine gardens and flowering walls, becoming — alongside aubrieta, basket-of-gold and candytuft — a fixture of dry-wall planting. Old cultivars with double flowers (Plena, listed in RHS catalogues under the epithet Flore Pleno) and with variegated leaves (Variegata) remain in cultivation to this day. In the Polish flora the genus Arabis is represented by wild-growing species, among them hairy rockcress (Arabis hirsuta), and in the Tatras alpine rockcress (Arabis alpina) — the very species into which modern systematics folds Caucasian rockcress.

Uses

The primary use is the crevices and crowns of dry walls, banks and rock gardens — anywhere the mat can spill freely in a cascade and water does not linger at the root collar. It also works along bed edges, in gravel beds and on sunny slopes that are hard to mow. At a spacing of 25-40 cm it quickly closes over the surface, which is why in a rock garden it is planted well away from small, slow-growing perennials such as lewisias or cushion saxifrages — its sideways-spreading stems can smother them over time. Classic combinations are white rockcress with purple aubrieta and pink moss phlox, as well as a mat interplanted with grape hyacinths, crocuses and botanical tulips, which push up through the rosettes and flower at the same time, then hide their yellowing leaves in the cover. On a terrace the plant is suited to shallow troughs and bowls with a gravel substrate, provided the drainage holes work well; a peaty, permanently moist substrate quickly leads to rotting of the root collar. The most important maintenance task is cutting back right after flowering — without it the mat splits apart and goes bald in the centre. It is planted in spring or early autumn, pressing the root ball into the crevice so that the rosettes protrude beyond the face of the wall. Rockcress does not tolerate being walked on and will not replace a lawn, nor does it succeed in shade or on heavy, waterlogged clay — on such sites it rarely survives two seasons.

Trivia

  • Thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana), the best-studied plant in the world and the fundamental model organism of plant genetics, owes its genus name to rockcress — Arabidopsis means literally "resembling Arabis".

Frequently asked questions

How does Caucasian rockcress differ from evergreen candytuft?

Most reliably by the leaves: rockcress has them grey-green, soft and densely hairy, while candytuft has them smooth, hairless, narrow, leathery and dark-green. They also differ in the structure of the flower head — in rockcress it is a loose raceme, in candytuft a flat shield — and in the stem base, which in candytuft becomes woody with age. Both species begin flowering in spring, but candytuft flowers longer, sometimes recorded into June or July; that is why they are often planted side by side to prolong the flowering of a wall.

Why does rockcress split apart and go bald in the centre?

This is a typical consequence of skipping the cutting-back. The stems spread sideways and the centre of the clump exposes bare stems. Right after flowering the whole plant is cut back by one half to two thirds — the mat rebounds more densely and looks good until autumn. Poor, well-drained soil also helps: an excess of nitrogen forces soft, sprawling stems.

Does Caucasian rockcress grow in shade?

No. It needs full sun. In shade it grows leggy, flowers sparsely, the mat loosens, and with poorer ventilation and longer-lasting moisture the risk of rot at the base of the stems rises.

How do you propagate Caucasian rockcress?

The simplest way is from stem cuttings taken from the material cut off after flowering — they root quickly in sand with peat. You can also divide the clump in early autumn or spring, or sow seed. Note: seed reproduces the species, whereas cultivars such as Variegata or Plena are propagated only vegetatively.

Why does my rockcress die over winter even though it is frost-hardy?

Almost always water is to blame, not temperature. The plant tolerates zones 4a-7b, but it does not tolerate water standing at the root collar during thaws and spring melts. It helps to plant it on a bank or in a wall, to mix heavy soil with gravel, and to mulch with grit rather than bark or compost around the rosettes.
