Common bugle (Ajuga reptans) is a native ground-cover perennial of the mint family (Lamiaceae) that spreads by above-ground runners rooting at the nodes and forms a dense mat 10-15 cm tall. It flowers from April or May through June, sending up erect, spike-like inflorescences of blue-purple flowers reaching 10-30 cm. Unlike low rock-garden perennials it is a plant of partial shade and shade, requiring soil that stays evenly moist. Cultivars with dark-purple and variegated leaves are grown for their season-long foliage rather than for the flowers.

Characteristics

A low perennial forming flat, dense mats of leaf rosettes joined by above-ground runners. The runners arise from the leaf axils, creep over the ground and root at the nodes, setting new rosettes there - hence the specific epithet reptans, meaning "creeping". The leaf mat itself is 10-15 cm tall, the erect flowering stems 10-30 cm, and a single plant spreads within a few seasons to 30-60 cm across, ultimately up to 0.5-1 m, and keeps going, because the clone has no natural limit. The leaves are obovate to spatulate, 4-8 cm long, with a wavy or shallowly scalloped margin, dark green and glossy, in the wild form often with a brownish flush; garden cultivars have them purple-black or variegated. The rosette foliage overwinters - bugle is evergreen, and after harder winters rather semi-evergreen: in frost without snow cover the leaves turn brown and have to be removed in spring. The stem is four-angled, typical of the mint family, usually hairy only on two opposite sides. The inflorescence is a dense, apparently spike-like tip of the shoot, made up of whorls of several flowers borne in the axils of the bracts. A single flower is 1-1.7 cm long and looks one-lipped: the upper lip is very short and two-lobed, the lower broad and three-lobed; the colour in wild plants is blue-purple, in cultivation also white and pink. The fruit is four nutlets, as in the whole family. From the two related native species, common bugle is told apart above all by its runners: Geneva bugle (Ajuga genevensis) does not produce them and has a stem hairy all round, while pyramidal bugle (Ajuga pyramidalis) also grows without runners but has a distinctly pyramidal inflorescence with large, overlapping bracts. The plant requires partial shade or shade and humus-rich, moderately moist soil of pH 5.5-7.2; it takes frost very well (zones 3a-9a) and does not tolerate drought at all.

‘Atropurpurea’
The oldest and most widely available dark-leaved cultivar: leaves brown-purple, flowers blue-purple. It keeps its colour best in partial shade with some morning sun; in deep shade it turns green.
‘Black Scallop’
Very dark, almost black, strongly glossy leaves with a distinctly wavy, scalloped margin. The rosette is compact and stiffer than in the older cultivars, and the colouring is deepest in good light.
‘Burgundy Glow’
A variegated cultivar - leaves cream-white, pink-burgundy and green all at once, grown for the foliage alone. It throws out reverted shoots with ordinary green leaves, which grow more strongly and displace the cultivar, so they have to be cut out at the base.
‘Catlin’s Giant’
The largest of the popular cultivars: leaves bronze-green, growing to about 15 cm long, flower spikes to roughly 20 cm. It gives a thicker, distinctly textured cover than the type.
‘Multicolor’
Sometimes sold as Rainbow. Green leaves speckled with cream, pink and brown; it grows more slowly than the single-coloured cultivars and needs shelter from harsh sun, because the pale parts of the blade scorch.
‘Braunherz’
A German selection with even, dark brown-purple, glossy leaves. Valued for its uniform colour holding through the whole season and vigorous growth that quickly gives a dense cover.

Growing and care

Watering

It needs soil that stays evenly moist - in drought the leaves turn brown at the edges, the mat thins out and bares the ground. Water less often but generously, at the base of the rosettes. It tolerates periodically wet ground, because in the wild it also grows in damp meadows; the real danger is standing water in compacted, airless soil, especially in winter - then the rosettes rot.

On fertile soil a thin layer of compost spread between the rosettes in spring is enough. An excess of nitrogen gives soft, over-lush leaves, which are more prone to disease in a dense mat.

Planting

Humus-rich, free-draining and moderately moist soil. Weed the ground thoroughly before planting - weeding a closed mat is already very difficult - and mix the top layer with compost. Set the rosette so that its centre stays at ground level; buried, it rots.

Pruning

Shear off the spent flower spikes - this tidies the cover and limits self-seeding; over larger areas it is enough to run a mower over it set to its highest cut. In early spring rake out the frost-damaged, browned leaves. Cut off runners straying beyond the intended area with a spade along the edge of the planting.

Root rot (Phytophthora root rot)

The disease develops in overly wet, poorly aerated substrate and attacks the roots and the base of the stem. The roots turn brown, rot and lose their bark, which slips off easily, and a dark, watery rot appears at the stem base. The above-ground part wilts, yellows and dies back despite moist soil – a characteristic symptom, because the damaged roots no longer take up water. Especially at risk are houseplants, succulents and cacti (from overwatering), and in the ground conifers, rhododendrons, ericaceous plants and strawberries on waterlogged sites. The process begins inconspicuously at the root hairs and root tips, which darken and disappear, after which the rot advances towards the framework roots and the root collar. Healthy, pale, active roots waste away — what remains is a dark, rusty-brown or blackish, watery mass, and the outer layer of the root bark slips off like a glove, exposing the discoloured central cylinder. In trees and shrubs, infection of the collar and the base of the trunk (stem-base rot) shows as a dark, often streaking patch, sometimes with oozing, and the bark there is moist and sunken; in conifers and rhododendrons, browning and dieback are seen from the bottom or from the centre of the crown while the soil is still moist. Characteristic is the nested (patchy) occurrence of symptoms in the bed — where water and the pathogen accumulate locally. It is worth distinguishing the two causal oomycete genera: Pythium mainly attacks seedlings and fine roots, causing damping-off and root rot in cool, wet substrate, whereas Phytophthora also attacks older, woody plants, framework roots and the collar, more strongly in warmer, water-saturated soil. Key for diagnosis is the contradiction of the symptoms: the plant wilts and looks 'dry', although the substrate is wet — this results from the destruction of the roots, not from a shortage of water.

Powdery mildew

A white, powdery coating on leaves, shoots and buds. The leaves turn yellow, become deformed and drop prematurely. The coating develops on both sides of the leaf blade, is often clearly visible from above, and can easily be rubbed off with a finger — it is the superficial mycelium of an ectoparasite that draws nutrients from the epidermal cells by means of feeding structures (haustoria). At first single, round, white spots appear, which in time merge and cover the entire leaf surface and the young growth. Young leaves and the current season's shoots are the most susceptible; heavy infection causes them to pucker, stiffen and stop growing, and on buds it leads to deformation or death of the flowers. On the fruit of some species (gooseberry, apple, cucurbits) the coating leaves russeting or a corky skin. Towards the end of the season, small, dark fruiting bodies (chasmothecia, formerly called cleistothecia) — the pathogen's overwintering structures — appear within the coating. The disease affects many plants, including roses, oak, privet, lilac, cucurbits, cereals, grapevine, apple, gooseberry, phlox and coneflowers, with each of these hosts being infected by a specialised species of fungus.

Slugs and snails

Slugs and shelled snails that feed at night and after rain. Symptoms: irregular holes in the leaves and young seedlings eaten off completely, silvery slime trails on leaves and soil. The greatest damage occurs in damp, shaded spots — particularly on lettuce, strawberries and hostas. The most damaging in gardens are the slugs (which lack an external shell): the Spanish slug (Arion vulgaris, formerly described as A. lusitanicus) and the grey field slug (Deroceras reticulatum). The leopard slug (Limax maximus) can be morphologically similar to them, but it feeds mainly on decaying organic matter and fungi and may even prey on other slugs, so it is of little importance as a pest of living plants. Shelled forms — grove snails (Cepaea) or the protected Roman snail (Helix pomatia) — usually cause less damage. The body is soft, elongated and permanently covered in slime; on the head there are two pairs of retractable tentacles — the longer upper pair bears the eyes, the shorter lower pair serves a tactile and olfactory function. Slugs and snails are hermaphrodites: they lay spherical, transparent or pearly eggs in clusters, hidden in damp soil, under stones and in leaf litter. A single Spanish slug can lay several hundred eggs; both eggs and young slugs overwinter, and feeding lasts from spring to late autumn, intensifying on warm, damp nights. The damage has smooth edges and often appears in the middle of the leaf blade, not only from the margin; seedlings and transplants are sometimes eaten down to bare soil, and on strawberries and ripening vegetables the slugs gnaw hollows into the fruit. The decisive diagnostic sign is the dried, silvery glistening slime trail — no insect leaves one.

History and origin

The species was described by Carl Linnaeus in Species Plantarum of 1753. Its natural range covers almost all of Europe and reaches south to north-western Africa and east to the Caucasus and Iran; in Poland common bugle is a common plant, growing in deciduous woodland and along its edges, in damp meadows, in thickets and by roadsides. It reached North America as an ornamental and has naturalised there as a garden escape. The genus name Ajuga is sometimes derived from the Latin a- (without) and iugum (yoke), supposedly alluding to the flower's lack of a distinct upper lip, or from the old herbal name abiga; the epithet reptans means "creeping". In old herbal medicine the herb of bugle belonged among the wound plants - it was applied externally to bruises, wounds and bleeding, as European herbals record from the 16th century onwards; modern phytotherapy does not use it. In gardening the species gained importance only as a ground-cover plant, and the turning point was the selection of dark-leaved and variegated cultivars, grown not for the flowers but for foliage that keeps its colour throughout the season.

Uses

Bugle is one of the more effective ground-cover perennials for shaded places: under shrubs and deep-rooting trees, on banks, along paths, between paving slabs and in woodland gardens. It is planted at 25-35 cm spacing, that is roughly 8-16 plants per square metre - the closer, the faster the cover closes up. The ground must be thoroughly weeded before planting and mulched until the mat closes, because weeding a finished cover is already very difficult. It does well in the company of hostas, ferns and astilbes, which rise above the mat, and of spring bulbs planted beneath it - bugle masks their yellowing leaves. It stands the occasional footstep, but it is no use either as a path or as a substitute for a working lawn; in a shaded spot that nobody walks on it can replace a lawn. Its limitation is moisture: in dry shade, for example right by the trunks of shallow-rooting trees, bugle thins out and dies away, and there lesser periwinkle and Japanese pachysandra cope better with drying out. The second limitation is its vigour - the runners invade lawns and smother small rock-garden perennials, so the planting is best contained with an edging or the edge cut back once a season with a spade. Cultivars with purple and variegated leaves colour up the more strongly the more light reaches them, so they are planted rather in partial shade; in deep shade they turn green and the whole effect comes down to an ordinary green cover.

Trivia

  • The bugle flower looks one-lipped because the upper lip of the corolla is reduced to two tiny teeth - it is the easiest identifying feature of the whole genus Ajuga.
  • Although it belongs to the mint family - the family of mint, sage and thyme - bugle has no scent: it contains only trace amounts of essential oils, and rubbing a leaf releases no aroma.

Frequently asked questions

Is common bugle suitable under trees?

Yes, provided the shade is not dry. It grows best under shrubs and deep-rooting trees and in the understorey of a woodland garden, where the ground stays moist. In dry shade right by the trunks of shallow-rooting trees - birch, spruce, Norway maple - the mat thins out and dies away; there lesser periwinkle or Japanese pachysandra are the surer choice.

How do I stop bugle from invading the lawn?

The runners creep over the surface of the soil, so a physical barrier is enough: an edging sunk 10-15 cm deep, or an edge cut back with a spade and renewed once or twice a season. It is also worth shearing off the spent flower spikes to reduce self-seeding. Plants that have already entered the turf are removed by hand - you have to pull out the whole rooted rosette, because any left behind grows back.

Why does the middle of my bugle mat die out and rot?

This is rot at the base of the rosettes, encouraged by soil that is too wet and compacted and by a lack of air in a dense, several-year-old cover. It is prevented by planting on free-draining soil, thinning old plantings and removing the cut plant material after shearing the flower spikes. Bare patches are filled with rooted rosettes cut from the edge of the mat - bugle can be divided from spring to early autumn.

Why have the purple leaves of my cultivar turned green?

There are two different possible causes. If the colour fades gradually over the whole plant, the cause is too deep shade - the purple colouring strengthens with greater access to light, which is why dark-leaved cultivars are planted in partial shade, not in full shade. If, on the other hand, a clump of entirely green, clearly stronger-growing leaves appears in the mat of a variegated cultivar, that is a reverted shoot; it must be cut out at the base, because it grows more vigorously than the cultivar and in time displaces it.

Is common bugle evergreen?

Yes, though in Polish conditions it is more accurate to call it semi-evergreen: the rosettes overwinter in leaf and for most of the winter the cover stays green. After a frosty, snowless winter the leaves turn brown at the edges or die back, but the plant regrows from buds in the rosettes and at the nodes of the runners. The only treatment needed is to rake out the damaged foliage in early spring, before new growth starts.
