Characteristics
A small shrub with thin, arching shoots that forms dense clumps over time thanks to its numerous root suckers. The leaves are small, oval to almost round, matt green and bluish beneath, and on vigorous shoots they can be irregularly lobed. The flowers are inconspicuous: bell-shaped, pinkish-white, with a five-lobed corolla 5-6 mm long and densely hairy inside, borne in small clusters in the axils of the upper leaves and in short racemes at the shoot tips. They open in succession throughout the summer, so the shrub flowers and sets fruit simultaneously for many weeks. The true ornament, however, is the fruit - spherical, snow-white, 10-15 mm across, botanically not berries but spongy drupes with two seeds. They ripen from September and persist on the shoots long after leaf fall, usually until January, and in cold winters even longer - birds only turn to them once tastier food runs out, and this is precisely what prolongs the decorative effect. The plant is exceptionally tolerant: it withstands drought, poor and calcareous soils, air pollution, frost down to USDA zone 3 and deep shade, in which it still spreads by suckers and layers. In European cultivation almost only the western variety (var. laevigatus) is encountered - more robust and with markedly larger fruits (up to 15 mm) than the typical form, whose fruits are only 6-10 mm.
Popular cultivars
- ‘Constance Spry’
- A British selection named in honour of the well-known florist. Unlike cultivars bred for cut-flower material, it was chosen as a strictly garden plant - with a relatively dense, compact habit.
- ‘Turesson’
- A low shrub with spreading, drooping shoots and characteristically elongated fruits. The berries may be flushed pink, especially when the plant grows under stress conditions.
- ‘Tilden Park’
- A Californian selection, widely distributed in the trade in the United States. It forms a relatively low shrub that fruits abundantly in white.
- ‘Taff’s White’
- A cultivar with white-margined leaves, growing markedly more slowly than the species type. Named in honour of the photographer Stephen Taffler.
- ‘Bokrabright’
- A Dutch breeding intended for cut-flower material: very abundant white fruits up to 13 mm, ripening as early as August. As a garden shrub it fares poorly - the habit is sparse and unkempt.
Growing and care
Watering
Once established it needs practically no watering - it withstands drought better than most ornamental shrubs. Water regularly only in the first season after planting and during long heatwaves on sandy soils.
Fertilizing
On average garden soil, fertilising is not needed. Excess nitrogen produces lush shoots at the expense of fruit set.
Planting
It requires no soil preparation - it establishes on sandy, loamy and calcareous soils, acidic and alkaline alike. For a hedge, plant more densely (80-100 cm), and as individual shrubs more loosely. If the shrub is not to spread beyond its allotted spot, it is worth digging in a root barrier straight away or planning to cut out the suckers annually.
Pruning
Cut about one third of the oldest shoots down to the ground, thin out the congested centre of the shrub and remove dead shoots. Snowberry tolerates rejuvenation pruning almost to the ground very well and quickly rebuilds its habit.

Śnieguliczka to jeden z niewielu krzewów ozdobnych, które zadowalająco rosną w suchym cieniu pod koronami starych drzew liściastych, gdzie konkurencja korzeni przesusza glebę.

Diseases and pests
A white, powdery coating on leaves, shoots and buds. The leaves turn yellow, become deformed and drop prematurely. The coating develops on both sides of the leaf blade, is often clearly visible from above, and can easily be rubbed off with a finger — it is the superficial mycelium of an ectoparasite that draws nutrients from the epidermal cells by means of feeding structures (haustoria). At first single, round, white spots appear, which in time merge and cover the entire leaf surface and the young growth. Young leaves and the current season's shoots are the most susceptible; heavy infection causes them to pucker, stiffen and stop growing, and on buds it leads to deformation or death of the flowers. On the fruit of some species (gooseberry, apple, cucurbits) the coating leaves russeting or a corky skin. Towards the end of the season, small, dark fruiting bodies (chasmothecia, formerly called cleistothecia) — the pathogen's overwintering structures — appear within the coating. The disease affects many plants, including roses, oak, privet, lilac, cucurbits, cereals, grapevine, apple, gooseberry, phlox and coneflowers, with each of these hosts being infected by a specialised species of fungus.
AnthracnoseDark, sharply defined, sunken spots appear on the leaves, stems and fruit, with collapsed, rotting patches on the fruit. In wet weather, pinkish, slimy masses of spores can be seen in the centre of the spots, often arranged in concentric zones. The spots enlarge and merge, the leaves die, and the fruit of beans, peppers, squash or strawberries rots; the disease intensifies in warm and humid summers. The most distinctive feature is precisely this salmon-pink, slimy coating of conidia filling the moist spots - these are the fungus's spore-producing clusters (acervuli), not a dry, powdery mould. On bean pods and fruit the spots are round, deeply sunken and sharply edged with a dark brown, sometimes reddish border; on leaf veins and stalks elongated, brownish-black, sunken streaks appear. On strawberry the disease attacks the fruit (hard, brown, sunken spots) as well as the crown and the stalks, leading to the dieback of whole plants. On cucurbits the young spots may be watery and translucent, later turning brown and cracking. Infected fruit is not suitable for storage, because the disease continues to develop after harvest.
AphidsSmall (1–3 mm) soft-bodied insects, green, black or pink, feeding in clusters on young shoots and the underside of leaves. They excrete sticky honeydew. The diagnostic feature that distinguishes aphids from other small sucking insects is the pair of siphunculi (tubular projections) at the rear of the abdomen together with a tail-like cauda; a single colony usually holds wingless forms (parthenogenetic females) alongside winged migrants that fly onto new plants in summer. In summer aphids reproduce parthenogenetically and viviparously over many generations, so the population builds up explosively; in autumn many species produce a sexual generation that lays overwintering eggs on the host, and host-alternating species move between a winter host (often a tree or shrub) and a summer host (a herbaceous plant). Feeding symptoms include curling, crinkling and distortion of young leaves, stunted growth, yellowing, and the shedding of buds and fruitlets. Abundant honeydew coats the leaves, and the sooty mould fungus that develops on it forms a black film which limits photosynthesis; the honeydew is fed on by ants, which in return defend the colony against predators. Aphids are also important vectors of plant viruses (mosaics among them), transmitting them from plant to plant even during a brief probing puncture.

History and origin
The species originates from North America; in Europe it is chiefly its western variety (Symphoricarpos albus var. laevigatus) that is grown, occurring naturally from California to Alaska. In Poland common snowberry was already recorded in 1824 and throughout the 19th and 20th centuries it was planted en masse - in parks, cemeteries, along railway embankments and in field shelterbelts - precisely because it forgave neglect. That same ease of cultivation eventually proved a problem: the shrub readily runs wild, spreads by suckers and forms dense, single-species thickets, which is why in studies of plants of alien origin in Poland it is counted among the established and invasive species, threatening the biological diversity of forests and mesophilous thickets. In 1935, in The Hague, Simeon Doorenbos began crossing common snowberry with species bearing coloured fruits; most of today's garden cultivars derive from this work and are now assigned to the hybrid Symphoricarpos x doorenbosii rather than to the original species.
Uses
It performs best where other shrubs fail: in dry shade beneath the crowns of old trees, on banks and embankments that need binding with roots, in unclipped screening hedges and in park plantings requiring minimal maintenance. Its long summer flowering makes it a valuable bee forage plant at a time when few shrubs are still in bloom, and the white fruits on leafless shoots are one of the few natural decorative accents in a December garden; fruiting sprigs are also used in floristry. Two limitations are worth accepting consciously. First, the fruits are poisonous and resemble sweets, so the shrub should not be planted near playgrounds or where small children play unsupervised. Second, because of its status as an invasive species it should not be planted along the edge of woodland, in river valleys or near protected areas - in an urban garden, cut off from natural habitats, the risk of spread is incomparably smaller.

How can the spread of snowberry be stopped?
The shrub spreads by root suckers, so cutting the above-ground part alone is not enough. Two measures are effective: installing a root barrier at planting and cutting out the suckers each year with a spade - it is important to cut deeply, at the root, not just at the soil surface. It is most convenient to do this in spring, when the suckers are still young.
When should snowberry be pruned so as not to lose the fruit?
In late winter or early spring, before growth begins. The flowers, and then the fruits, are set on the current year's growth, so pruning at this time does not remove the decoration and additionally stimulates strong, well-fruiting shoots. Pruning in summer, after flowering, removes the developing berries and deprives the shrub of its main asset.
How does common snowberry differ from cultivars with pink fruits?
Most garden cultivars - those with pink and pearly fruits such as 'Mother of Pearl' or 'Magic Berry', but also the white-fruited 'White Hedge' - do not belong to this species but to the hybrid Symphoricarpos x doorenbosii, bred in The Hague from 1935 with the involvement of common snowberry, S. orbiculatus and S. microphyllus. Common snowberry itself has purely white fruits only, and selections such as 'Constance Spry', 'Turesson' or 'Tilden Park' are assigned to the species.
How is common snowberry propagated?
The simplest way is by root suckers: in winter a rooted sucker is cut off with a spade and planted straight into its final position. Hardwood cuttings taken in winter and semi-ripe cuttings in July and August also succeed well. Propagation from seed is possible but lengthy - the seeds have a hard coat and an immature embryo, so they require several months of stratification (a few months in warmth followed by a few months in cold). For a species regarded as invasive in Poland it is worth limiting propagation to vegetative methods from one's own shrub.
