Characteristics
The Douglas fir is an imposing coniferous tree with a straight, soaring trunk and a regular, conical crown that becomes increasingly columnar and thinned at the base with age. In European conditions it usually reaches 30-50 m in height, and over 90 m in its homeland. The needles are soft and flattened, 2-3.5 cm long, arranged radially around the shoot, dark green above and with two paler bands of stomata beneath; when crushed they release a distinct, fruity-resinous scent. After falling, each needle leaves a small oval scar on the shoot - unlike spruce, which is left with peg-like projections, and unlike fir, which bears round, sucker-like marks. The buds are spindle-shaped, sharply pointed, glossy, chestnut-brown and free of resin - one of the most reliable identifying features of the genus. The bark of young trees is smooth, greyish-green and dotted with resin blisters; older bark becomes thick, corky and deeply fissured. Most distinctive are the hanging cones, 5-10 cm long, from between whose scales protrude three-pronged bracts resembling the hind legs and tail of a mouse hiding in the cone - a feature found in neither firs nor spruces and one that plainly distinguishes the Douglas fir. The genus name Pseudotsuga, meaning "false hemlock", points to its misleading resemblance to the unrelated genus Tsuga.

- A dwarf, slow-growing cultivar with a flat-rounded, cushion-shaped habit and soft, blue-green needles. It usually grows to 1-2 m, making it suitable for small gardens, rock gardens and larger containers.

- A cultivar with a narrow, upright, almost columnar habit and branches set steeply upwards. It takes up less width than the typical form, so it is sometimes planted where a vertical accent is needed.
- ‘Glauca Pendula’
- A weeping cultivar with hanging branches and markedly blue-green (glaucous) needles. Its habit depends heavily on how it is trained - without support it spreads irregularly; valued as a picturesque specimen.
Growing and care
Watering
Young trees are watered during drought until they establish; mature specimens cope on their own. The species tolerates neither standing water, which favours root Phytophthora, nor prolonged drying out.
Fertilizing
As a forest tree it needs practically no fertilising; where growth is weak on poor soil, a mulch of compost is enough.
Planting
Fresh, deep, humus-rich and well-drained soil with a reaction from slightly acidic to neutral; a sunny position sheltered from frosty and drying winds.
Pruning
Minimal pruning - the Douglas fir, like most conifers, does not produce new shoots from leafless, woody branches, so it is not cut back into old wood.

Diseases and pests
The fungus attacks the roots and stem base of trees and shrubs, causing their slow decline – the plants grow weakly, the crown thins, the leaves become smaller, and eventually they dry up. The diagnostic sign is white, fan-shaped sheets of fungal mycelium forming a dense layer under the bark at the stem base, with a distinct mushroom smell. In the soil and under the bark there are black or dark-brown, bootlace-like rhizomorphs, by which the fungus spreads to further plants. In autumn, clusters of fruiting bodies – honey mushrooms – grow at the base of infected trees. The above-ground symptoms are non-specific and easily confused with drought or overfeeding: some plants die suddenly (the whole tree turns brown within a single season, especially in hot weather), while others weaken over years – producing short growth, discolouring prematurely, and just before death setting an exceptionally heavy crop of flowers or fruit ('stress flowering'). In conifers, resin bleeding at the stem base is common. When the bark is exposed at the root collar, the wood of the roots and stem turns white and softly rots – honey fungus causes a white rot of the wood. The mycelial layer can be cream-coloured and leathery, spreading radially from beneath the dead bark. A biological curiosity, rather than a sign useful in garden diagnosis, is that the mycelium in moist, infected wood can glow very faintly in the dark (so-called 'cold light') – the effect is too weak and requires complete darkness, so in practice it cannot be used to identify the disease. The disease advances in foci – neighbouring plants die off one after another around an infected one.
Root rot (Phytophthora root rot)The disease develops in overly wet, poorly aerated substrate and attacks the roots and the base of the stem. The roots turn brown, rot and lose their bark, which slips off easily, and a dark, watery rot appears at the stem base. The above-ground part wilts, yellows and dies back despite moist soil – a characteristic symptom, because the damaged roots no longer take up water. Especially at risk are houseplants, succulents and cacti (from overwatering), and in the ground conifers, rhododendrons, ericaceous plants and strawberries on waterlogged sites. The process begins inconspicuously at the root hairs and root tips, which darken and disappear, after which the rot advances towards the framework roots and the root collar. Healthy, pale, active roots waste away — what remains is a dark, rusty-brown or blackish, watery mass, and the outer layer of the root bark slips off like a glove, exposing the discoloured central cylinder. In trees and shrubs, infection of the collar and the base of the trunk (stem-base rot) shows as a dark, often streaking patch, sometimes with oozing, and the bark there is moist and sunken; in conifers and rhododendrons, browning and dieback are seen from the bottom or from the centre of the crown while the soil is still moist. Characteristic is the nested (patchy) occurrence of symptoms in the bed — where water and the pathogen accumulate locally. It is worth distinguishing the two causal oomycete genera: Pythium mainly attacks seedlings and fine roots, causing damping-off and root rot in cool, wet substrate, whereas Phytophthora also attacks older, woody plants, framework roots and the collar, more strongly in warmer, water-saturated soil. Key for diagnosis is the contradiction of the symptoms: the plant wilts and looks 'dry', although the substrate is wet — this results from the destruction of the roots, not from a shortage of water.

History and origin
The species was first recorded by the Scottish physician and naturalist Archibald Menzies during an expedition to the Pacific coast in the late 18th century - hence the specific epithet menziesii. Living plants and seeds were brought to Europe by another Scottish botanist, David Douglas, in 1827, and his name endured in the Polish and English common names (jedlica Douglasa, Douglas fir). Taxonomists long struggled to classify the tree: it was placed in turn among the pines, firs, spruces and hemlocks before a separate genus, Pseudotsuga, was set aside for it. Two main geographic varieties are distinguished: the coastal one (var. menziesii) - faster growing but more sensitive to frost, and the mountain, so-called blue variety (var. glauca) - slower but far more resistant to low temperatures and drought. From the late 19th century the Douglas fir began to be introduced on a large scale into European forests as a species that quickly produces valuable timber; in Central Europe, including Poland, it became the most important non-native conifer in forestry. The tallest Douglas firs are among the tallest trees in Europe, and within its native range the species is counted among the tallest trees in the world, usually ranked just behind the coast redwood.
Uses
In forestry the Douglas fir is valued above all for its rapid growth and its strong, springy and durable timber, used in construction, joinery and for veneers. In landscape settings it is planted as a specimen in large gardens, parks and arboreta and in avenues - anywhere with room for a tree that will ultimately reach several tens of metres. It is also grown for Christmas trees, since its soft, aromatic needles hold well after cutting. The species is not suited to small domestic gardens; only dwarf and weeping ornamental cultivars are intended for such sites. The Douglas fir grows best on fresh, deep, humus-rich and well-drained soils with a reaction from slightly acidic to neutral; it tolerates neither prolonged drought nor waterlogging, which favours root Phytophthora. The site should be sunny or lightly shaded and sheltered from cold, drying winds - especially in the case of the more sensitive coastal variety, whose young growth is damaged by late spring frosts. In cooler and drier parts of the country the blue variety (glauca) is the safer choice. It is planted in autumn or early spring, with wide spacing; the tree requires practically no pruning, and shortening the leader permanently spoils its habit. As a non-native species the Douglas fir is at times a subject of ecological debate - in places it regenerates spontaneously, though in Poland it is not classed among invasive plants.
