Characteristics
A tree with a straight trunk and a broad, regular crown, with smooth, long-persisting grey bark. The leaves are large (10–20 cm), with 7–11 lobes ending in a point and equipped with fine, bristle-like teeth — this is the most reliable feature distinguishing them from the native oaks with rounded lobes. In autumn they turn scarlet and intense red, although on young trees the colour can be duller and browner. The acorns are broadly ovate, set in a shallow cup, and ripen only in their second year.

Watering
Considerably more resistant to drought and poor soils than the native oaks — this is one of the reasons for its expansiveness. Only young trees require watering.
Fertilizing
The red oak copes well on acidic and poor soils; fertilising is unnecessary.
Planting
Tolerates acidic, sandy and dry soils. BEFORE planting, consider the status of the species: the red oak escapes from plantings, and next to a natural forest it is better to choose the pedunculate or the sessile oak.

What and how to cut
Prune from late autumn to early spring, on frost-free days. Remove dead, diseased, damaged and crossing shoots, along with competing leaders, leaving one main leader. Prune sparingly. Make the cut just beyond the swollen branch ring (collar) at the base of the branch — not flush with the trunk and without leaving a stub; a wound like this heals over best.
In winter, during dormancy (December–February).
What not to do
Do not remove large limbs without a clear need, and for thick, tall trees leave the pruning to arborists. Do not prune in early spring when the sap starts to rise, or during frost. In a single season, do not remove more than roughly a quarter of the crown.

A specimen in open space shows the full autumn colour and at the same time does not border a natural forest into which it could spread.
Bad companions
The red oak grows faster, fruits earlier and more abundantly, and thereby effectively displaces the native oaks from the habitats in which it establishes itself.
The thick leaves of the red oak decompose very slowly, forming a dense litter layer that acidifies the soil and mechanically blocks the emergence of ground-layer plants.

Diseases and pests
The fungus attacks the roots and stem base of trees and shrubs, causing their slow decline – the plants grow weakly, the crown thins, the leaves become smaller, and eventually they dry up. The diagnostic sign is white, fan-shaped sheets of fungal mycelium forming a dense layer under the bark at the stem base, with a distinct mushroom smell. In the soil and under the bark there are black or dark-brown, bootlace-like rhizomorphs, by which the fungus spreads to further plants. In autumn, clusters of fruiting bodies – honey mushrooms – grow at the base of infected trees. The above-ground symptoms are non-specific and easily confused with drought or overfeeding: some plants die suddenly (the whole tree turns brown within a single season, especially in hot weather), while others weaken over years – producing short growth, discolouring prematurely, and just before death setting an exceptionally heavy crop of flowers or fruit ('stress flowering'). In conifers, resin bleeding at the stem base is common. When the bark is exposed at the root collar, the wood of the roots and stem turns white and softly rots – honey fungus causes a white rot of the wood. The mycelial layer can be cream-coloured and leathery, spreading radially from beneath the dead bark. A biological curiosity, rather than a sign useful in garden diagnosis, is that the mycelium in moist, infected wood can glow very faintly in the dark (so-called 'cold light') – the effect is too weak and requires complete darkness, so in practice it cannot be used to identify the disease. The disease advances in foci – neighbouring plants die off one after another around an infected one.
Powdery mildewA white, powdery coating on leaves, shoots and buds. The leaves turn yellow, become deformed and drop prematurely. The coating develops on both sides of the leaf blade, is often clearly visible from above, and can easily be rubbed off with a finger — it is the superficial mycelium of an ectoparasite that draws nutrients from the epidermal cells by means of feeding structures (haustoria). At first single, round, white spots appear, which in time merge and cover the entire leaf surface and the young growth. Young leaves and the current season's shoots are the most susceptible; heavy infection causes them to pucker, stiffen and stop growing, and on buds it leads to deformation or death of the flowers. On the fruit of some species (gooseberry, apple, cucurbits) the coating leaves russeting or a corky skin. Towards the end of the season, small, dark fruiting bodies (chasmothecia, formerly called cleistothecia) — the pathogen's overwintering structures — appear within the coating. The disease affects many plants, including roses, oak, privet, lilac, cucurbits, cereals, grapevine, apple, gooseberry, phlox and coneflowers, with each of these hosts being infected by a specialised species of fungus.
Winter mothA moth with marked sexual dimorphism: the male has grey-brown, finely banded wings with a span of about 25 mm, whereas the female is practically wingless and flightless and therefore climbs up the trunk in autumn to lay its eggs in the crown. In spring green looper caterpillars with pale lengthwise stripes hatch, moving with the characteristic "looping" gait (arching the rear of the body) and eating the developing buds, young leaves and fruitlets, often webbing them together with threads. It feeds on apple, pear, plum, cherry and many deciduous trees and shrubs. The mature caterpillar reaches about 25 mm in length and is yellow-green with a darker dorsal line and pale stripes along its sides; as a typical looper (Geometridae) it has only two pairs of prolegs at the end of the abdomen, hence its looping gait. The eggs are laid singly near the buds and in bark crevices, where they overwinter, and just before the spring hatch they change colour from greenish to orange-red. The species has one generation a year: the moths fly in late autumn (October-December, which is the origin of the Polish name "przedzimek", meaning before-winter), on cool, frost-free evenings, and the flightless females then climb the trunks. The spring hatch of the caterpillars is closely synchronised with bud burst (usually April); after about 4-6 weeks of feeding the caterpillars lower themselves to the ground on threads and pupate shallowly in the soil, where the pupa spends the summer. The signs of feeding are holed and ragged young leaves, eaten flower and leaf buds, and deformed fruit covered with corky scars that develop from the damaged fruitlets; under heavy pressure the caterpillars can almost strip the crown bare.

History and origin
Brought to Europe in the 18th century as an ornamental tree, and from the 19th century planted in forestry as well — it was meant to be a fast-growing producer of timber and a species resistant to industrial pollution. Only after decades did it turn out that it escapes easily: in Poland and Germany it is today counted among the invasive alien species, and its removal from nature reserves is sometimes the subject of dedicated active conservation programmes.
Uses
Planted in parks, urban avenues and large gardens as a tree of high decorative value that tolerates air pollution and difficult soil conditions. The decision to plant it is nevertheless worth taking consciously: near forests, reserves and natural areas the native oaks are a decidedly better choice, and the red oak makes sense at most in a heavily transformed urban setting, far from habitats it could come to dominate.
Trivia
- The autumn colour is the more intense the colder the nights and the sunnier the days — in our climate it is therefore different year after year, from deep scarlet to plain brown.
- The name rubra, meaning red, refers not only to the leaves but also to the wood — freshly cut it has a distinctly pinkish-red tone.

Is the red oak worth planting in a garden?
That depends above all on the surroundings. The scarlet autumn colour is genuinely striking, and the tree tolerates difficult urban conditions — in dense development, far from natural areas, it is a sensible choice. If, however, your plot adjoins a forest, a natural park or waste ground, the tree will become a source of acorns spreading further. In such a place the pedunculate oak will be the better choice — or, if it is only about a red autumn, the smoke tree or the Japanese maple.
