Characteristics
A tree with a massive trunk and a broad, domed crown. The most recognisable feature is the bark: it comes away in large, thin plates, exposing lighter layers beneath, so that the trunk is covered by a mosaic of green, cream, olive and grey. The leaves are large, palmately lobed, with 3–5 lobes — deceptively similar to maple leaves, but arranged alternately, not oppositely, which is a reliable way of telling them apart. The fruit clusters are spherical heads 2–3 cm across, hanging on long stalks usually in pairs and persisting on the tree through the winter.

Watering
Tolerates both compacted urban soils and periodic flooding — this is one of the reasons for its popularity in avenues. Water young trees regularly.
Fertilizing
Mature trees need no fertilising; in the city, providing an adequate soil volume for the roots matters more than fertiliser.
Planting
Requires a great deal of space — the eventual crown is 15–25 m wide. Tolerates compacted, saline and urban soils. Decidedly not for a small plot.

What and how to cut
Prune from late autumn to early spring, on frost-free days. Remove dead, diseased, damaged and crossing shoots, along with competing leaders, leaving one main leader. Prune sparingly. Make the cut just beyond the swollen branch ring (collar) at the base of the branch — not flush with the trunk and without leaving a stub; a wound like this heals over best.
In winter, during dormancy (December–February).
What not to do
Do not remove large limbs without a clear need, and for thick, tall trees leave the pruning to arborists. Do not prune in early spring when the sap starts to rise, or during frost. In a single season, do not remove more than roughly a quarter of the crown.

Planted in a row of a single species it gives a coherent, regular vault and tolerates the shared, cyclical pollarding superbly.

Diseases and pests
A white, powdery coating on leaves, shoots and buds. The leaves turn yellow, become deformed and drop prematurely. The coating develops on both sides of the leaf blade, is often clearly visible from above, and can easily be rubbed off with a finger — it is the superficial mycelium of an ectoparasite that draws nutrients from the epidermal cells by means of feeding structures (haustoria). At first single, round, white spots appear, which in time merge and cover the entire leaf surface and the young growth. Young leaves and the current season's shoots are the most susceptible; heavy infection causes them to pucker, stiffen and stop growing, and on buds it leads to deformation or death of the flowers. On the fruit of some species (gooseberry, apple, cucurbits) the coating leaves russeting or a corky skin. Towards the end of the season, small, dark fruiting bodies (chasmothecia, formerly called cleistothecia) — the pathogen's overwintering structures — appear within the coating. The disease affects many plants, including roses, oak, privet, lilac, cucurbits, cereals, grapevine, apple, gooseberry, phlox and coneflowers, with each of these hosts being infected by a specialised species of fungus.
Armillaria root rot (honey fungus)The fungus attacks the roots and stem base of trees and shrubs, causing their slow decline – the plants grow weakly, the crown thins, the leaves become smaller, and eventually they dry up. The diagnostic sign is white, fan-shaped sheets of fungal mycelium forming a dense layer under the bark at the stem base, with a distinct mushroom smell. In the soil and under the bark there are black or dark-brown, bootlace-like rhizomorphs, by which the fungus spreads to further plants. In autumn, clusters of fruiting bodies – honey mushrooms – grow at the base of infected trees. The above-ground symptoms are non-specific and easily confused with drought or overfeeding: some plants die suddenly (the whole tree turns brown within a single season, especially in hot weather), while others weaken over years – producing short growth, discolouring prematurely, and just before death setting an exceptionally heavy crop of flowers or fruit ('stress flowering'). In conifers, resin bleeding at the stem base is common. When the bark is exposed at the root collar, the wood of the roots and stem turns white and softly rots – honey fungus causes a white rot of the wood. The mycelial layer can be cream-coloured and leathery, spreading radially from beneath the dead bark. A biological curiosity, rather than a sign useful in garden diagnosis, is that the mycelium in moist, infected wood can glow very faintly in the dark (so-called 'cold light') – the effect is too weak and requires complete darkness, so in practice it cannot be used to identify the disease. The disease advances in foci – neighbouring plants die off one after another around an infected one.
Winter mothA moth with marked sexual dimorphism: the male has grey-brown, finely banded wings with a span of about 25 mm, whereas the female is practically wingless and flightless and therefore climbs up the trunk in autumn to lay its eggs in the crown. In spring green looper caterpillars with pale lengthwise stripes hatch, moving with the characteristic "looping" gait (arching the rear of the body) and eating the developing buds, young leaves and fruitlets, often webbing them together with threads. It feeds on apple, pear, plum, cherry and many deciduous trees and shrubs. The mature caterpillar reaches about 25 mm in length and is yellow-green with a darker dorsal line and pale stripes along its sides; as a typical looper (Geometridae) it has only two pairs of prolegs at the end of the abdomen, hence its looping gait. The eggs are laid singly near the buds and in bark crevices, where they overwinter, and just before the spring hatch they change colour from greenish to orange-red. The species has one generation a year: the moths fly in late autumn (October-December, which is the origin of the Polish name "przedzimek", meaning before-winter), on cool, frost-free evenings, and the flightless females then climb the trunks. The spring hatch of the caterpillars is closely synchronised with bud burst (usually April); after about 4-6 weeks of feeding the caterpillars lower themselves to the ground on threads and pupate shallowly in the soil, where the pupa spends the summer. The signs of feeding are holed and ragged young leaves, eaten flower and leaf buds, and deformed fruit covered with corky scars that develop from the damaged fruitlets; under heavy pressure the caterpillars can almost strip the crown bare.

History and origin
The hybrid arose in the 17th century in Europe, probably in Spain or London, from a cross between the oriental and the American plane. It quickly proved to be the ideal species for the industrial age: when the cities of the 19th century were choking on coal smoke, the plane grew where other trees were dying back. It thus became a symbol of European urban design — from the boulevards of Paris and the squares of London to the avenues of southern France.
Uses
For avenues, boulevards, large parks and city squares, where it is valued for its resistance to pollution, compacted soil and the salinity left by winter road salting, and for its tolerance of very hard pruning. Cyclical pollarding makes it possible to keep low, regular crowns even in narrow streets. It is entirely unsuitable for a home garden — unless we are talking about an estate of several hectares.
Trivia
- The exfoliation of the bark is not an aesthetic whim but a cleansing mechanism: along with the plates of bark the plane sheds the pollutants deposited on them, instead of accumulating them.
- The plane leaf is so similar to a maple leaf that only the arrangement settles it: the plane has alternate leaves, the maple always opposite ones.
Frequently asked questions
Why does plane bark peel off in plates?
This is a normal feature of the species, not a symptom of disease. The bark of the plane is rigid and does not stretch as the trunk thickens, so it cracks and falls away in large plates, exposing the lighter layer beneath — hence the characteristic blotched pattern. The process also makes practical sense: along with the plates of bark the tree sheds the dust and pollutants deposited on them, instead of accumulating them. This is one of the reasons the plane copes so well with urban conditions.
Does the plane cause allergies?
Partly. Plane pollen is a moderate allergen, but a far greater problem is the fine hairs covering the spherical fruit clusters and the young leaves. In spring they become airborne and mechanically irritate the eyes, throat and airways — in people with asthma or bronchial hyperreactivity they can provoke marked symptoms. The tree itself, however, is not toxic either to people or to animals.
Can a plane be planted in a home garden?
Realistically no. The plane grows to 25–35 m tall with a crown 15–25 m wide, grows fast and develops a powerful root system that can lift paving and damage services. On a typical plot it will shade the whole garden and the neighbour's house within a dozen or so years. This is a tree for parks, avenues and large public spaces — if you are looking for a similarly striking tree on a smaller scale, consider the Norway maple or the small-leaved lime.
