Characteristics
A perennial herbaceous plant with square stems, spreading by underground and above-ground runners. The leaves are toothed and strongly scented with menthol. Small, lipped flowers form in spike-like clusters. The shoots reach 30–90 cm in height, are hairless or sparsely hairy and often flushed purple at the base; a single clump reaches about a metre across, but unrestricted runners spread further with every season, and after a few years an older clump dies out in the centre. The leaves are borne in opposite pairs, each tier turned 90° to the one below, and are ovate-lanceolate, dark green, sharply serrate at the margin and — unlike spearmint — set on distinct, short stalks. Together with the scent, this is the most reliable identification feature: peppermint smells sharp and mentholated and clearly cools the palate, whereas spearmint (Mentha spicata) has almost stalkless leaves and a sweeter, carvone aroma. The flower clusters are terminal, dense and bluntly tipped, made up of small pink-purple flowers that open from July to September. Growth is fast. The plant overwinters as underground runners and shoots again in spring straight from the ground; grown in open ground in Polish conditions it is fully hardy. Position: sun or part shade, in consistently moist, humus-rich soil with a slightly acid to neutral reaction (pH 6.0–7.5). If it dries out, the shoots wilt quickly, the lower leaves turn brown and the content of essential oil — whose main component is menthol — falls.
Popular cultivars
- ‘Mitcham’
- A historic English type from the 18th-century plantations near London, still the benchmark raw material for herbal infusions and oil — valued for its high menthol content and clean, sharp aroma. It is not a single clone or a registered cultivar but a group of selections; the trade knows, among others, Black Mitcham with dark stems and White Mitcham.
- ‘Chocolate’
- The stems and leaf veins are dark, brownish red. The aroma is mentholated with a distinct cocoa note — used mainly for desserts, ice cream and drinks, less often as a classic dried herb. It spreads by runners just as vigorously as the type, so it needs exactly the same restriction by a container.
- ‘Eau de Cologne’
- A citrus form (f. citrata), also known as bergamot mint. The leaves are flushed purple and the scent is perfumed and bergamot-like instead of sharply mentholated. For lemonades, cocktails and fruit desserts rather than classic mint tea.

Diseases and pests
A white, powdery coating on leaves, shoots and buds. The leaves turn yellow, become deformed and drop prematurely. The coating develops on both sides of the leaf blade, is often clearly visible from above, and can easily be rubbed off with a finger — it is the superficial mycelium of an ectoparasite that draws nutrients from the epidermal cells by means of feeding structures (haustoria). At first single, round, white spots appear, which in time merge and cover the entire leaf surface and the young growth. Young leaves and the current season's shoots are the most susceptible; heavy infection causes them to pucker, stiffen and stop growing, and on buds it leads to deformation or death of the flowers. On the fruit of some species (gooseberry, apple, cucurbits) the coating leaves russeting or a corky skin. Towards the end of the season, small, dark fruiting bodies (chasmothecia, formerly called cleistothecia) — the pathogen's overwintering structures — appear within the coating. The disease affects many plants, including roses, oak, privet, lilac, cucurbits, cereals, grapevine, apple, gooseberry, phlox and coneflowers, with each of these hosts being infected by a specialised species of fungus.
RustRusty-orange to brown, powdery clusters of spores on the underside of leaves, matched on the upper side by yellow spots. Heavily infected leaves turn yellow and drop prematurely, and the plant weakens. It affects roses and mallows among others, and some rusts have an alternate host (for example pear rust and juniper). The pustules (clusters of summer spores, the so-called uredinia) break through the leaf skin and release an orange-rust powder that rubs off onto the finger - this is the most reliable identifying feature. In high summer they appear mainly on the underside of the blade, along the veins and on the leaf stalks, and in some species also on green shoots and sepals. In late autumn the clusters darken to brownish-black - these are the overwintering spores (telia) by which the fungus survives winter on plant debris. Rusts are highly host-specific: a given rust usually infects only one species or genus of host, which is why the rusts of rose, mallow and marsh mallow, bean, leek and garlic, mint, pelargonium or lawn are different, non-interchangeable fungi. The general symptom - yellowing and premature leaf drop - weakens the plant and limits flowering and yield, though it rarely kills it within a single season.
AphidsSmall (1–3 mm) soft-bodied insects, green, black or pink, feeding in clusters on young shoots and the underside of leaves. They excrete sticky honeydew. The diagnostic feature that distinguishes aphids from other small sucking insects is the pair of siphunculi (tubular projections) at the rear of the abdomen together with a tail-like cauda; a single colony usually holds wingless forms (parthenogenetic females) alongside winged migrants that fly onto new plants in summer. In summer aphids reproduce parthenogenetically and viviparously over many generations, so the population builds up explosively; in autumn many species produce a sexual generation that lays overwintering eggs on the host, and host-alternating species move between a winter host (often a tree or shrub) and a summer host (a herbaceous plant). Feeding symptoms include curling, crinkling and distortion of young leaves, stunted growth, yellowing, and the shedding of buds and fruitlets. Abundant honeydew coats the leaves, and the sooty mould fungus that develops on it forms a black film which limits photosynthesis; the honeydew is fed on by ants, which in return defend the colony against predators. Aphids are also important vectors of plant viruses (mosaics among them), transmitting them from plant to plant even during a brief probing puncture.

History and origin
Peppermint arose as a natural hybrid in 17th-century England. Mints were already prized as medicinal and refreshing herbs in antiquity, mentioned in Egyptian, Greek and Roman sources. The first scientific description is generally credited to a note by John Ray from 1696, based on a specimen found in Hertfordshire — from that point the plant began to be deliberately propagated vegetatively, because as a hybrid of water mint (Mentha aquatica) and spearmint (Mentha spicata) it does not come true from seed. In the 18th century commercial cultivation developed around Mitcham near London; that local type still trades today under the name Mitcham and is regarded as the benchmark raw material for high menthol content. In the 19th century commercial growing took off in the United States — first in New York State and New England, later in Michigan and Indiana; in the 20th century its centre shifted to the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, Idaho), which became the largest peppermint oil producing region. Peppermint leaf (Menthae piperitae folium) and peppermint oil (Menthae piperitae aetheroleum) are pharmacopoeial raw materials, described among others in the European Pharmacopoeia. In Poland peppermint is one of the basic cultivated herbs and has for decades been among the most frequently planted species in home herb gardens.
Uses
For herb gardens (in containers), balcony pots and windowsill planters. The leaves are used fresh and dried in infusions, dishes and drinks. In open ground the best solution is a sunken pot with a base and drainage holes, or a box whose walls reach about 30 cm down into the soil with a rim standing 5–10 cm above it — the wall stops the underground runners and the raised edge stops those creeping over the surface. Plant in April–May or in September, spaced 30–40 cm apart. Because mint copes with damp, heavier sites where most Mediterranean herbs fail, it does well beside garden ponds and along a shaded edge of a bed; it should not, however, be combined in one container with thyme, lavender or sage, which need drier, free-draining compost, nor with basil — that has similar water needs but is smothered by the mint's runners. Harvest throughout the season, shortening the shoots by roughly a third of their length; for a rejuvenating cut you can go lower, to about a third of the clump's height. Dry the leaves in shade with good air movement, at below 35°C, because above that menthol escapes along with the rest of the oil. Beyond the kitchen (infusions, desserts, syrups, liqueurs, chocolate products) the plant is a valuable forage for bees from July to September, when flowering species in the garden are becoming scarce; since the leaf harvest is taken just before flowering, leave part of the clump uncut so that it can flower for pollinators and harvest the rest for drying.

What causes rusty spots on the undersides of mint leaves, and can such leaves still be harvested?
That is mint rust (Puccinia menthae) — orange, later darkening clusters of spores on the underside of the blade; a crowded, damp clump and overhead watering both favour it. Affected leaves must not be harvested for drying or infusions. Cut diseased shoots off at ground level and dispose of them (not on the compost heap), thin the clump and water at the roots. With a heavy infection, cut the whole plant down to the ground and remove the material — this greatly reduces the source of spores, but the fungus also overwinters in the runners, so the infection can return; if rust keeps coming back, the surest option is to start a new clump from healthy cuttings in a different spot.
