Characteristics
Long, brittle shoots bear whorls of stiff, dark-green leaves forked into narrow segments. The plant forms no roots; it absorbs water and nutrients over its entire surface. Small, inconspicuous flowers develop and are pollinated underwater, so they remain invisible to the observer.

One of the most widely used oxygenating plants in garden ponds and aquariums. Its popularity stems from its reliability: it grows under a wide range of conditions, without substrate or fertilising.

Frequently asked questions
Does hornwort need to be planted in substrate?
No. Hornwort has no roots and lives freely in the water column — you simply drop a bunch into the water. It can be loosely weighted down or its ends tucked between stones, but it is not planted in soil like rooting plants.
Does hornwort help with algae in a garden pond?
Yes. It quickly takes up the nutrients from the water that it deprives algae of, and additionally releases substances that inhibit their development. As a result, the water is often clearer. To work, however, it needs a sufficient quantity — a single sprig is not enough.
What happens to hornwort in winter?
At the end of the season, hornwort forms dense resting buds (turions) and dies back, while the turions sink to the bottom of the pond. There they safely overwinter and rebuild the plant in spring, which is why the species persists in our ponds without help.
