Characteristics
A spreading, thorny shrub with silvery-grey, narrow, lance-shaped leaves covered in scales. The flowers are small, inconspicuous and wind-pollinated, borne separately by sex on different plants. The fruits are densely set, bright orange, sour false drupes that persist on the shoots for a long time. The roots live in symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing Frankia actinomycetes.

History and origin
Long known in Eurasia as a medicinal and food plant; the fruit and sea buckthorn oil were used in the folk medicine of Asia and Europe. Today it is widely cultivated on a commercial scale in China and Eastern Europe and planted to protect land from erosion.
Uses
Grown for healthy, vitamin-rich fruit (juices, oils, preserves), as a dense defensive hedge and to stabilise dunes, slopes and degraded land. It performs in difficult, poor and coastal conditions where other shrubs fail.

Why does my sea buckthorn not fruit?
Sea buckthorn is dioecious: male and female flowers grow on separate shrubs. To get fruit you must plant a female specimen and at least one male nearby (one male is enough for several females), because pollination is by wind.
Is sea buckthorn expansive?
Yes, it spreads strongly by root suckers and can form dense thickets. In the garden it is best limited with a root barrier or by regularly removing suckers, especially away from the hedge.
