Symptoms

In spring the young leaves become puckered, thickened and curled, taking on a red or yellow-green colour with blistered bulges. Heavily infected leaves gradually become covered with a white-grey coating of spores, turn brown and drop prematurely. Weakened trees set fewer fruit, grow more weakly and are more prone to frost damage. The first symptoms appear just after the buds open — the leaf blade is thick, stiff and brittle, and its surface unevenly bulged, because the fungus stimulates the leaf cells into excessive, irregular divisions. The colour ranges from pale pink and red to purple; over time the diseased areas turn grey and become covered with a delicate, white-grey coating — this is a layer of spore-bearing sacs (the fruiting of the fungus) on the leaf surface. The symptoms are not limited to the leaves: young shoots may also be affected (they thicken, shorten and become distorted) as well as the fruitlets (deformed, with warty, cracking outgrowths). After the first, diseased flush of leaves has fallen, the tree usually puts out a second, now healthy flush, which can be misleading — the infection is a single, early-spring event — but this repeated leafing out exhausts the tree's reserves. The disease affects peach and nectarine, and more rarely apricot or almond. When severe and recurring over several seasons it leads to weakening, poor cropping, dieback of shoots and increased susceptibility to frost.

Treatment

Removing and destroying infected leaves and spraying with copper- or sulphur-based fungicides. The timing of the treatment before bud break, in the bud-swelling stage, is crucial, because once the leaves have unfolded the spray is no longer effective. The reason for such a strict timing is biological: the spores overwintering on the bark and between the bud scales germinate and penetrate the tissues exactly at the moment the buds swell and break, before the leaves unfold. Once the fungus is already inside the tissue, there is no effective curative (interventive) treatment — all protection is preventive and shielding in nature. In practice one to two protective sprays are applied: in autumn after about 3/4 of the leaves have fallen, and in early spring when the buds begin to swell but before the green tips appear; in cool, rainy springs a second early-spring treatment may be justified. Raking up and destroying fallen, infected leaves reduces the source of infection, but is only a supporting measure — the resting spores overwinter mainly on the bark and bud scales, not only on the leaves. Removing the most heavily infected leaves during the season reduces sporulation and the infective pool for the following year, but does not reverse the current infection. It is worth watering and feeding a weakened tree so that it can support regeneration with a second flush of leaves.

Prevention

A preventive spray in early spring, and ideally an additional one in autumn after leaf fall, growing less-susceptible cultivars and avoiding cool, damp sites that favour infection. The disease develops strongly in cool, damp weather during bud break (most severely at a temperature of about 10–16°C and with moisture persisting on the buds for a long time), whereas a warm and dry spring largely limits it. An effective, non-chemical method for individual trees and espalier forms is to shelter the crown from rain (a canopy or plastic sheet) during bud break — keeping the buds and developing leaves dry makes it impossible for the spores to germinate within the infection window. The choice of site is also important: warm, sunny, airy and sheltered (e.g. against a sun-facing wall), away from frost pockets and damp shade. It is worth reaching for less-susceptible cultivars and looking after the tree's condition (balanced fertilising, watering), so that it better tolerates any defoliation. Orchard hygiene — raking up and removing fallen leaves — additionally reduces disease pressure.
