Characteristics
A medium-sized tree with a dense, rounded or broadly ovate crown, distinctly shorter and more compact than the common horse chestnut: it usually reaches 10–15 m in height, exceptionally up to 20 m, with a crown 6–12 m wide. It grows slowly — annual increments rarely exceed 40 cm — and does not begin to flower abundantly until it is well over a decade old. The leaves are palmately compound, most often made up of 5, more rarely 7 leaflets, dark green, distinctly wrinkled and unevenly toothed along the margin; they are smaller and thicker than those of the common horse chestnut, which makes the crown look darker and more massive. The winter buds are only slightly sticky, unlike the strongly resinous, gummy buds of the white-flowered parent — this is the most reliable identifying feature outside the growing season. The flowers open in May and June, usually a week or two later than in the common horse chestnut: they are deep pink to carmine-red, with a paler, yellowish blotch in the throat that reddens over time, and are gathered into upright, conical panicles 12–20 cm long — shorter and narrower than the white "candles" of the common horse chestnut. The fruit is a capsule smaller than that of the white-flowered parent, almost smooth or covered with only a few short, blunt spines, usually containing one or two seeds; the tree also sets distinctly fewer fruits. A characteristic feature of this hybrid is its tendency to form knobbly outgrowths and burr-like swellings on the trunk and thick branches; these appear on most specimens with age and do not endanger the tree's life. The bark is dark grey, scaly, and on older trees flakes off in patches.

- ‘Briotii’
- The most commonly planted cultivar, selected around 1858 in the French nurseries at Trianon. The flowers are darker, carmine-red, and the panicles larger than in the typical form; the leaves are darker and glossier. It sets few fruits, which is an advantage in plantings over pavements and car parks.
- ‘O’Neill’
- A cultivar valued for its large panicles of bright red flowers, more intensely coloured than in the typical form. In the trade it is sometimes also offered under the name O'Neill Red.
- ‘Fort McNair’
- An American cultivar with pink flowers and a yellow throat, named after Fort McNair in Washington. It is described as less susceptible to leaf spot and marginal leaf scorch than the typical form.
Growing and care
Watering
Water young trees regularly for the first two to three seasons after planting. Mature specimens cope on their own, but they tolerate standing water and compacted, trampled soil around the trunk poorly.
Fertilizing
Moderately — in fertile soil mature trees usually require no additional feeding.
Planting
Fertile, deep, fresh and permeable soil, preferably with a neutral reaction (pH around 6–7.5). A position with room to spare for a broad crown, away from walls and underground utilities.
Pruning
Minimal pruning — removing deadwood, diseased and crossing shoots, and shaping the crown of young trees. Shoots growing out below the graft union should be cut off right at the base.

Diseases and pests
The fungus attacks the roots and stem base of trees and shrubs, causing their slow decline – the plants grow weakly, the crown thins, the leaves become smaller, and eventually they dry up. The diagnostic sign is white, fan-shaped sheets of fungal mycelium forming a dense layer under the bark at the stem base, with a distinct mushroom smell. In the soil and under the bark there are black or dark-brown, bootlace-like rhizomorphs, by which the fungus spreads to further plants. In autumn, clusters of fruiting bodies – honey mushrooms – grow at the base of infected trees. The above-ground symptoms are non-specific and easily confused with drought or overfeeding: some plants die suddenly (the whole tree turns brown within a single season, especially in hot weather), while others weaken over years – producing short growth, discolouring prematurely, and just before death setting an exceptionally heavy crop of flowers or fruit ('stress flowering'). In conifers, resin bleeding at the stem base is common. When the bark is exposed at the root collar, the wood of the roots and stem turns white and softly rots – honey fungus causes a white rot of the wood. The mycelial layer can be cream-coloured and leathery, spreading radially from beneath the dead bark. A biological curiosity, rather than a sign useful in garden diagnosis, is that the mycelium in moist, infected wood can glow very faintly in the dark (so-called 'cold light') – the effect is too weak and requires complete darkness, so in practice it cannot be used to identify the disease. The disease advances in foci – neighbouring plants die off one after another around an infected one.
Horse-chestnut leaf minerA small moth of only a few millimetres' wingspan with rusty-brown, silvery-striped wings; the damage is caused by its larvae, which mine the leaves of the horse chestnut. Small brown mines form in the leaf blade, later expanding and lying lengthwise between the veins. Heavily infested leaves turn brown, dry out and fall as early as July and August, so that the trees look autumnal in the middle of summer. Repeated feeding over the season (several generations) weakens the trees and worsens their condition from year to year. An invasive species, described only in 1986 by Lake Ohrid in Macedonia (hence the epithet ohridella), it spread across the whole of Europe within about a dozen years. The main host is the horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum); the red horse chestnut (Aesculus × carnea) is distinctly less susceptible. The mines lie on the upper side of the leaf blade and are best seen against the light — inside one can then make out the larva and black granules of frass, which distinguishes the damage from fungal spots. Under Polish conditions the insect usually produces 3–4 generations per season (even more in warm years), and successive generations overlap, so the damage builds up from June right through to autumn. It overwinters as a pupa in the fallen leaves, and the spring flight of the moths coincides with the leafing and flowering of the horse chestnuts. Feeding by the leaf miner alone rarely leads to the death of the tree, but the chronic premature defoliation repeated year after year weakens it, reduces its growth increments and worsens its vigour and ornamental value, increasing its susceptibility to other stress factors.
Winter mothA moth with marked sexual dimorphism: the male has grey-brown, finely banded wings with a span of about 25 mm, whereas the female is practically wingless and flightless and therefore climbs up the trunk in autumn to lay its eggs in the crown. In spring green looper caterpillars with pale lengthwise stripes hatch, moving with the characteristic "looping" gait (arching the rear of the body) and eating the developing buds, young leaves and fruitlets, often webbing them together with threads. It feeds on apple, pear, plum, cherry and many deciduous trees and shrubs. The mature caterpillar reaches about 25 mm in length and is yellow-green with a darker dorsal line and pale stripes along its sides; as a typical looper (Geometridae) it has only two pairs of prolegs at the end of the abdomen, hence its looping gait. The eggs are laid singly near the buds and in bark crevices, where they overwinter, and just before the spring hatch they change colour from greenish to orange-red. The species has one generation a year: the moths fly in late autumn (October-December, which is the origin of the Polish name "przedzimek", meaning before-winter), on cool, frost-free evenings, and the flightless females then climb the trunks. The spring hatch of the caterpillars is closely synchronised with bud burst (usually April); after about 4-6 weeks of feeding the caterpillars lower themselves to the ground on threads and pupate shallowly in the soil, where the pupa spends the summer. The signs of feeding are holed and ragged young leaves, eaten flower and leaf buds, and deformed fruit covered with corky scars that develop from the damaged fruitlets; under heavy pressure the caterpillars can almost strip the crown bare.

History and origin
The red horse chestnut occurs nowhere in the wild — it is a hybrid of the common horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) from the Balkan mountains and Aesculus pavia, a small tree or shrub from the south-eastern part of North America. The Atlantic separates the parents, so the cross could only have arisen in cultivation, in botanical collections where both trees grew side by side. The first specimens appeared in Western Europe in the early nineteenth century, and the name Aesculus × carnea was published in 1818 by Johann Michael Zeyher, court gardener at Schwetzingen. The hybrid turned out to be an allotetraploid: it combines the full, unreduced chromosome sets of both parents (2n = 80 against 2n = 40 in each of them), which makes it fertile and allows it to reproduce its features in seed-grown offspring. This is a rarity among tree hybrids and the main reason why the red horse chestnut spread as a stable, seed-propagated ornamental plant rather than a single clone maintained solely by grafting. In the second half of the nineteenth century came cultivars with darker flowers, the most popular to this day being 'Briotii', selected around 1858 in the French nurseries at Trianon. In Poland it has been planted in parks, avenues and along streets since the nineteenth century, and its importance rose markedly after the 1990s, when the horse-chestnut leaf miner began to devastate the foliage of common horse chestnuts on a mass scale and a substitute was sought for them.
Uses
First and foremost a tree for parks, avenues and streetsides, and in larger gardens a specimen tree placed where its May flowering can be seen from a distance. It is distinctly smaller than the common horse chestnut, so it fits into places where the white-flowered parent would be too big, but it still needs room: it is planted at a spacing of 6–10 m from its neighbours and away from walls and underground utilities. The best position is full sun or light partial shade, along with fertile, deep, fresh and permeable soil, preferably with a neutral reaction (pH around 6–7.5); it tolerates waterlogging, salinity and prolonged soil compaction poorly. The planting time is autumn or early spring, before the buds develop. Cultivars are bought as specimens grafted onto common horse chestnut seedlings, so a swelling at the base of the trunk is normal, and shoots growing out below it must be cut off right at the base. Pruning is limited to removing deadwood and crossing shoots, during the winter dormant period; thick wounds heal slowly, which is why heavy crown shaping is not carried out. Dense shade and dry soil prevail beneath the crown, so instead of a lawn it is better to use a bark mulch or a planting of shade-tolerant plants with low water requirements — ivy, periwinkle or male fern. Because of its poisonous seeds it is not a good choice for a playground or a horse pasture. The main practical argument for the red horse chestnut in new urban plantings is simple: its leaves stay green until autumn, while the common horse chestnuts growing nearby turn brown as early as July.
