Siberian squill (Scilla siberica) is a low-growing bulbous plant with intensely blue, slightly nodding flowers that naturalizes into colourful carpets under trees and on slopes in early spring.

Characteristics

From the small bulb grow 2–4 narrow, channelled leaves and low flower stems 10–20 cm tall. Each stem bears several star-shaped, slightly nodding flowers with six petals in a rich, sapphire-blue shade with a darker stripe down the middle. After flowering the plant quickly dies back, and the bulbs rest in the soil until the next spring.

Growing and care

Watering

During growth, from late winter to spring, the soil should be moderately moist. In summer the bulbs are dormant and tolerate drying out — extra watering is then unnecessary and encourages rot.

Planting

The bulbs are planted in autumn at a depth of about 8 cm, in well-drained, humus-rich soil; ideally in large groups where the plant can naturalize freely.

History and origin

Despite its species name, the plant does not come from Siberia but from the Caucasus, Asia Minor and southern Russia. It has been known in garden cultivation since the 19th century and quickly spread as one of the easiest and cheapest naturalizing spring bulbs.

Uses

Ideal for naturalizing under deciduous trees, in lawns, on rock gardens and along bed edges. It looks best planted in large groups, alongside other early spring bulbs, with which it forms multicoloured carpets.

Trivia

  • Contrary to the epithet siberica, the species does not occur naturally in Siberia — its homeland is the Caucasus region and Asia Minor.
  • The flowers open wider in the sun, while in cloudy weather and at night they stay half-closed and nod more strongly.
