Characteristics

A plant with upright, pinnate leaves bearing thick, glossy, dark-green leaflets. Below ground it forms fleshy tubers (rhizomes) that store water and nutrients. More precisely, this organ is a tuberous rhizome, and an additional water reserve is held in the swollen leaf bases. What looks like a stem is in fact the axis of a single leaf: distinctly thickened and fleshy at the base, and higher up carrying 6–8 pairs of opposite leaflets with leathery, waxy, glossy blades. A single leaf usually reaches 40–60 cm in length, exceptionally up to 90 cm on old specimens, while the whole clump grows 0.4–1 m tall and up to 0.8 m wide. New growth emerges straight from the tuber as light-green, tightly rolled “spears” that gradually unfurl and darken — the surest sign that the plant is growing. Growth is slow: a mature specimen puts out only a few new leaves per season. It flowers rarely and mainly on older specimens: just above the substrate, at the base of the leaves, appears the inflorescence typical of the arum family — a short spadix sheathed in a creamy-green spathe, often completely hidden among the leaf stalks. The diagnostic features are the swollen leaf base, the absence of a true stem above ground and the characteristic sheen of the leaflets, which never need polishing. It requires a free-draining substrate and a position in partial shade or shade — direct sun causes fading and scorching of the blades, while temperatures below 15°C clearly slow growth and, combined with a wet substrate, encourage tuber rot.

Popular cultivars

‘Raven’
A cultivar whose leaves emerge light green and, after a few weeks, darken to an almost black purple. It is sold under the trade name Raven; the correct cultivar name is Dowon (US PP30035). It grows more slowly than the species; the darkening also takes place in partial shade, and brighter diffused light only deepens the colour.
‘Zenzi’
A dwarf cultivar with a shortened leaf axis and densely set, slightly curled leaflets. It forms a compact, squat mound usually below 40 cm — for small interiors and windowsills.
‘Zamicro’
A miniature form that keeps the proportions of the species but is about half the size: shorter leaves and finer leaflets. In the trade it functions more as an established nursery name than as a formally registered cultivar, and it is sometimes confused with Zenzi. Good for small containers and tabletop arrangements.

Root rot (Phytophthora root rot)

The disease develops in overly wet, poorly aerated substrate and attacks the roots and the base of the stem. The roots turn brown, rot and lose their bark, which slips off easily, and a dark, watery rot appears at the stem base. The above-ground part wilts, yellows and dies back despite moist soil – a characteristic symptom, because the damaged roots no longer take up water. Especially at risk are houseplants, succulents and cacti (from overwatering), and in the ground conifers, rhododendrons, ericaceous plants and strawberries on waterlogged sites. The process begins inconspicuously at the root hairs and root tips, which darken and disappear, after which the rot advances towards the framework roots and the root collar. Healthy, pale, active roots waste away — what remains is a dark, rusty-brown or blackish, watery mass, and the outer layer of the root bark slips off like a glove, exposing the discoloured central cylinder. In trees and shrubs, infection of the collar and the base of the trunk (stem-base rot) shows as a dark, often streaking patch, sometimes with oozing, and the bark there is moist and sunken; in conifers and rhododendrons, browning and dieback are seen from the bottom or from the centre of the crown while the soil is still moist. Characteristic is the nested (patchy) occurrence of symptoms in the bed — where water and the pathogen accumulate locally. It is worth distinguishing the two causal oomycete genera: Pythium mainly attacks seedlings and fine roots, causing damping-off and root rot in cool, wet substrate, whereas Phytophthora also attacks older, woody plants, framework roots and the collar, more strongly in warmer, water-saturated soil. Key for diagnosis is the contradiction of the symptoms: the plant wilts and looks 'dry', although the substrate is wet — this results from the destruction of the roots, not from a shortage of water.

Mealybugs

Insects covered in a white, cottony, waxy coating, gathering in leaf axils, at the base of shoots and on the underside of leaf blades. They look like tufts of cotton wool. They suck sap, weaken the plant and excrete sticky honeydew, on which black sooty mould develops. A common pest of houseplants and succulents. Adult females are oval, soft-bodied insects about 2-5 mm long, with a pinkish or grey body hidden under wax, often bearing waxy filaments along the sides and at the tip of the abdomen. Males are tiny, winged and do not feed. In most species eggs are laid in white, cottony ovisacs (cocoons), from which mobile larvae (crawlers) hatch and spread across the plant, carrying the infestation to neighbouring specimens; some mealybugs (e.g. Pseudococcus longispinus), however, are ovoviviparous and give birth to live crawlers without a distinct ovisac. In the warm, dry conditions of homes and glasshouses mealybugs develop all year round, in several overlapping generations - which is why a single treatment is rarely enough. Feeding symptoms are stunted growth, yellowing, deformation and premature leaf drop, and under heavy infestation dieback of shoots; the black sooty mould on the honeydew further reduces photosynthesis and disfigures the plant. A separate form is the root mealybug (Rhizoecus), forming white, waxy clusters on the roots and inside the root ball - the plant weakens and wilts with no visible pest on the above-ground parts. Mealybugs are often attended by ants, which eat the honeydew and protect the colonies from natural enemies.

History and origin

Although known to botanists since the 19th century, the ZZ plant only entered mass houseplant cultivation in the 1990s thanks to Dutch nurseries, quickly gaining popularity as an “unkillable” plant. The species was first described in 1829 as Caladium zamiifolium, and in 1856 Heinrich Wilhelm Schott set it apart in its own, single-species genus Zamioculcas. The generic name combines a reference to the cycads of the genus Zamia, which its pinnate leaves resemble, with the Arabic word for taro (culcas) — a related plant from the same arum family. In the wild the species grows in dry, rocky scrub and open woodland of eastern and south-eastern Africa (from Kenya to eastern South Africa), where the dry season lasts for months; that is where the underground tubers and the thick, waxy cuticle of the leaflets evolved. The breakthrough in cultivation came in the mid-1990s, when Dutch nurseries mastered mass propagation from single leaflets and introduced the plant to retail chains — first in Western Europe, then in other markets. In German-speaking countries the name Glücksfeder, meaning “feather of luck”, has taken hold.

Uses

Ideal for dimly lit interiors, offices and rooms where other plants would not survive. Perfect for beginners and people who travel often. It performs best by north- and east-facing windows, deeper inside a room, and in hallways and stairwells. It also copes with bathrooms, provided they receive daylight — the intervals between waterings then need to be longer, because the substrate dries out more slowly there. Plant it in a container with drainage holes, in a mineral-humus substrate with a generous addition of sand or perlite; ready-made cactus compost mixed with a universal one works well. Repot every 2–3 years in spring, once the expanding tubers begin to deform the wall of the pot, and choose a container only slightly larger than the previous one. In mixed plantings combine it only with species that share the same water and light requirements — snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata), cast-iron plant (Aspidistra elatior), shade-tolerant succulents such as haworthias; do not pair it with cacti and desert succulents, which need the full sun that scorches the leaflets of the ZZ plant. A shared bowl with plants that need a constantly moist substrate ends in tuber rot. Moving it outdoors from June to August is possible, but optional and risky — in Polish conditions nights often drop below 15°C. If you do, choose a spot in deep shade, sheltered from rain, allow a few days of acclimatisation, and bring the plant indoors when the forecast predicts nights below 12°C; the plant gains no clear benefit from such a move. Because of the calcium oxalates, do not place it within reach of small children or of pets that chew on leaves, and use gloves for pruning and repotting.
