Characteristics
A densely branched shrub or small tree with a conical outline that broadens and spreads with age. In cultivation it usually stays a shrub 2–4 m tall, while old specimens in fertile, sheltered positions reach about 6 m; in the mild, oceanic climate of Western Europe it grows into a small tree about 10 m tall, exceptionally taller. It grows slowly — reaching its final size takes several decades, but in return it lives more than a hundred years. The bark stays smooth and grey-green for a long time. The leaves are evergreen, leathery, stiff, dark green and strongly glossy above, paler beneath, with a margin that is wavy and tipped with hard spines. A single leaf persists on the shoot for several years, so the shrub renews its foliage gradually and never stands bare. The spininess is not uniform across the whole plant: leaves in the lower part of the shrub, within reach of grazing animals, tend to be markedly more bristly than those higher in the crown, which often have an almost smooth margin. The flowers are small, white, four-petalled, clustered in the leaf axils; they open in May and June, are subtly fragrant and are readily visited by bees. Dioecy is visible on inspecting a flower: a male specimen has four prominent stamens and a vestigial pistil, while a female one has a green, spherical ovary in the centre and reduced stamens. Without pollen carried from a male plant, a female specimen will not set a single berry — this is the commonest cause of disappointment with a bought "holly that does not fruit." The second frequent cause is too deep a shade: shade tolerance concerns growth, not flowering, so beneath a dense tree canopy the shrub grows healthily but sets few flower buds and fruits sparingly. The fruits are spherical drupes about 1 cm in diameter, ripening blood-red from September and persisting on the branches through winter. For humans they are toxic, while for birds they are a reserve for the hungry gap: thrushes and fieldfares usually eat them only in late winter, once the frosted flesh has softened.

- ‘J.C. van Tol’
- A female, self-fertile cultivar — it sets fruit even without a male specimen nearby, though it fruits more heavily with a pollinator. Leaves dark green, glossy, almost spineless, so safe beside paths and in small gardens. Berries large, bright red, abundantly set.
- ‘Pyramidalis’
- A female, self-fertile cultivar with a dense, conical habit and leaves bearing few spines. Fruits heavily and regularly; good for narrow hedges and as a specimen with a distinct, upright silhouette.
- ‘Alaska’
- Regarded as one of the hardiest cultivars of the species, which is decisive under Polish conditions; introduced into cultivation around 1960 in Germany. Female, with a narrow, erect habit and narrower, more strongly toothed leaves than the type. Fruits every year, and the berries persist into March.
- ‘Ferox Argentea’
- A male cultivar — it will not set fruit and is planted as a pollinator for female specimens and for its foliage alone. The spines grow not only on the leaf margin but also on the upper surface of the blade, hence the English name hedgehog holly; the leaf margin is creamy white.
- ‘Silver Queen’
- Despite the name suggesting a female sex, this is a male cultivar and does not fruit — planted as a pollinator and for its ornamental foliage. Young shoots purple, young leaves with a pinkish tinge, mature ones dark green with a broad, cream margin.
- ‘Handsworth New Silver’
- A female, fruiting cultivar with dark purple shoots and narrow, spiny leaves with a broad cream margin. Forms a large, dense shrub; distinguished with the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Growing and care
Watering
It does not tolerate permanently wet ground — in water pockets the roots rot. Evergreen leaves lose water through winter too, so before the frosts arrive, especially in snowless and windy weather, it is worth watering the shrub generously; browning of the leaf edges in late winter is most often desiccation, not frost damage.
Fertilizing
A layer of compost and mulch spread around the shrub is entirely sufficient. Do not fertilise after July — stimulated late growth will not have time to harden off before winter and suffers frost damage.
Planting
A position sheltered from freezing, drying winds and from full winter sun; soil fertile, humus-rich, fresh but permeable, without water pockets. For a hedge, plant every 60–80 cm. If we want berries, a male specimen must grow within about a dozen metres, and the spot itself should be partly shaded or bright — in deep shade the shrub grows well but flowers sparingly.
Pruning
It tolerates hard pruning and regenerates from old wood, so a neglected shrub that is bare at the base can be rejuvenated. Single specimens need only the removal of damaged shoots and those breaking out of the outline. Thick gloves are essential for the work — the spines are hard and easily pierce thin material.

Diseases and pests
The disease develops in overly wet, poorly aerated substrate and attacks the roots and the base of the stem. The roots turn brown, rot and lose their bark, which slips off easily, and a dark, watery rot appears at the stem base. The above-ground part wilts, yellows and dies back despite moist soil – a characteristic symptom, because the damaged roots no longer take up water. Especially at risk are houseplants, succulents and cacti (from overwatering), and in the ground conifers, rhododendrons, ericaceous plants and strawberries on waterlogged sites. The process begins inconspicuously at the root hairs and root tips, which darken and disappear, after which the rot advances towards the framework roots and the root collar. Healthy, pale, active roots waste away — what remains is a dark, rusty-brown or blackish, watery mass, and the outer layer of the root bark slips off like a glove, exposing the discoloured central cylinder. In trees and shrubs, infection of the collar and the base of the trunk (stem-base rot) shows as a dark, often streaking patch, sometimes with oozing, and the bark there is moist and sunken; in conifers and rhododendrons, browning and dieback are seen from the bottom or from the centre of the crown while the soil is still moist. Characteristic is the nested (patchy) occurrence of symptoms in the bed — where water and the pathogen accumulate locally. It is worth distinguishing the two causal oomycete genera: Pythium mainly attacks seedlings and fine roots, causing damping-off and root rot in cool, wet substrate, whereas Phytophthora also attacks older, woody plants, framework roots and the collar, more strongly in warmer, water-saturated soil. Key for diagnosis is the contradiction of the symptoms: the plant wilts and looks 'dry', although the substrate is wet — this results from the destruction of the roots, not from a shortage of water.
Sooty mouldOn leaves, shoots and fruit a black, soot-like coating forms that can be partly wiped off with a finger. These fungi do not infect the plant tissue – they grow on the sweet, sticky honeydew excreted by aphids, whiteflies, mealybugs, psyllids and scale insects. The coating therefore appears exactly where these pests feed, and its main harm is that it masks the leaf blade, reduces photosynthesis and disfigures the plants. The symptom is often seen on citrus, lime, maple and on houseplants and greenhouse plants. The coating may be thin and cobweb-like or thick, crusty and dull black — depending on the fungus species and the amount of honeydew; on evergreen plants it can persist through the whole winter. A key identifying feature: after the blade is wiped, healthy green tissue emerges from beneath the black layer — sooty mould leaves no spots, necrosis or pitting, because it does not penetrate the leaf. The extent of the symptom is also characteristic: the soot settles where the sticky honeydew drips, so it appears not only on leaves but also on objects beneath the plant — the pavement, garden furniture, a windowsill or car bodywork — which in itself reveals pests feeding higher up. The sooty mould fungi themselves are dark-pigmented (melanised) saprotrophs, which is why the layer is deeply black. Direct damage to the plant is usually moderate — weakening through leaf shading, loss of vigour, poorer appearance and reduced market value of fruit or ornamental plants — but a dense, long-lasting coating on many leaves genuinely limits assimilation and growth. Sooty mould is best treated as a visible signal that a colony of sap-sucking insects is developing higher up on the plant (or on a tree above it).
Armoured and soft scale insectsImmobile, brown or yellowish shields (1-4 mm) attached to stems and the underside of leaves, especially along the veins. Easily mistaken for growths on the plant. They suck sap, causing yellowing and weakening, and excrete sticky honeydew. Common on figs, orchids and plants with tough leaves. The collective name covers two groups with different biology. Armoured scales (Diaspididae) have a hard waxy shield separate from the body, which can be prised off - beneath it emerges a tiny, legless and wingless female; they do not excrete honeydew. Soft scales (Coccidae) have a convex, cup-shaped cover fused with the body, and it is they that excrete it abundantly. Sticky honeydew - the domain of soft scales and other honeydew-producing scale insects, not of armoured scales - settles on the leaves and attracts sooty mould fungi (sooty mould, sooty blotch) as well as ants, which defend the colony against predators. The only mobile feeding stage is the crawler - a flat, tiny larva which, after hatching from beneath the mother's shield, disperses over the plant, then settles, inserts its stylet into the conducting tissues and loses the ability to move; adult females remain immobile for the rest of their lives. Males pupate and, as tiny, winged, short-lived insects, do not feed. In heated interiors the pest breeds all year round, producing several overlapping generations; outdoors usually 1-3 generations, and fertilised females or eggs hidden beneath the shield overwinter. Feeding symptoms are yellowing and premature leaf drop, dieback of shoots, stunting and weakening of the plant, and secondarily a black coating of sooty mould on leaves covered with honeydew. On fruit trees infested by San Jose scale (Comstockaspis perniciosa), reddish discolouration appears around the feeding sites, and heavily colonised branches die back. Because the shields are immobile and their colour blends into the bark and veins, an infestation is easily overlooked until honeydew appears or the plant is noticeably weakened - which is why regular inspection of the leaf undersides and shoot axils is key.
AphidsSmall (1–3 mm) soft-bodied insects, green, black or pink, feeding in clusters on young shoots and the underside of leaves. They excrete sticky honeydew. The diagnostic feature that distinguishes aphids from other small sucking insects is the pair of siphunculi (tubular projections) at the rear of the abdomen together with a tail-like cauda; a single colony usually holds wingless forms (parthenogenetic females) alongside winged migrants that fly onto new plants in summer. In summer aphids reproduce parthenogenetically and viviparously over many generations, so the population builds up explosively; in autumn many species produce a sexual generation that lays overwintering eggs on the host, and host-alternating species move between a winter host (often a tree or shrub) and a summer host (a herbaceous plant). Feeding symptoms include curling, crinkling and distortion of young leaves, stunted growth, yellowing, and the shedding of buds and fruitlets. Abundant honeydew coats the leaves, and the sooty mould fungus that develops on it forms a black film which limits photosynthesis; the honeydew is fed on by ants, which in return defend the colony against predators. Aphids are also important vectors of plant viruses (mosaics among them), transmitting them from plant to plant even during a brief probing puncture.

History and origin
The species name aquifolium was formed from the Latin words acus ("point, needle") and folium ("leaf") and refers to the spiny margin of the blade. A shrub that in the depths of winter stands green and laden with red berries has been treated since antiquity as a sign of the persistence of life: the Romans sent each other holly branches during the Saturnalia, and Christianity took the custom over into Christmas observance — it was fixed, among other things, by the English carol "The Holly and the Ivy." The German name Stechpalme, meaning "spiny palm," arose because in countries without palms it was holly branches that were blessed on Palm Sunday. Holly wood is hard, heavy and almost white, with a very fine grain; it was used for inlay work, tool handles, walking sticks and white chess pieces, and, dyed black, it substituted for ebony. Birdlime was boiled from the bark. The plant was introduced into gardens early and several hundred cultivars were selected, differing in habit, leaf colour, spininess and sex. The reverse side of this success is naturalisation: on the north-west coast of North America, common holly has escaped from cultivation into the forests and is regarded there as an invasive species, displacing the native understorey.
Uses
It is most often planted as an evergreen hedge: dense, impenetrable and spiny, so genuinely a barrier, and at the same time tolerant of clipping and able to regenerate from old wood — it is therefore also suitable for clipped forms and for a specimen with a striking silhouette. Thanks to its tolerance of deep shade it succeeds where most ornamental shrubs fail: beneath the canopy of old trees, against north-facing walls, in shaded corners of a plot. It is worth distinguishing two goals, however: if what matters is the evergreen mass and screening alone, deep shade is fine, but if it is the red berries, we plant the female specimen in partial shade or in a bright spot, because the darker it is, the sparser the flowering and the fewer the berries. Fruiting female specimens can be the only source of colour in the garden in December and January, and branches with berries are a classic material for wreaths and arrangements. Ecologically the shrub works on three levels: the flowers give bees nectar in May and June, the dense, spiny interior is a safe nesting place for small birds, and the berries provide late-winter food for thrushes. Because of the toxic berries and hard spines it is better not to plant it beside a sandpit, a dog run or along narrow paths.

- The spininess of holly leaves varies within a single plant: blades within reach of animals' mouths are heavily bristled, while those higher up often have smooth margins. Research on this species indicates that it is an induced defensive response to browsing, not a fixed trait of the cultivar.
- The German name Stechpalme ("spiny palm") and the English tradition of festive wreaths describe the same cultural mechanism: in Northern Europe, evergreen, prickly branches substituted for unavailable palm fronds and symbolised life persisting despite winter.
- In Great Britain, holly is the spring larval host plant of the holly blue butterfly (Celastrina argiolus) — its spring generation lays eggs on holly, and its summer generation on ivy.
- The sex of a cultivar cannot be read from its name. The classic example is Silver Queen — despite the "queen" in its name, it is a male cultivar that will never set fruit.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't my holly have red berries?
Most often for one of four reasons. First, the bought specimen may be male — such plants never fruit, regardless of care. Second, a female specimen with no male pollinator growing within about a dozen or so metres will flower, but will not set berries. Third, seedlings and very young plants need several years before they start to flower at all. Fourth, the position is simply too dark — beneath a dense tree canopy holly grows well but sets few flower buds, so it also sets few berries; for fruiting, a partly shaded or bright spot is better. If we do not have room for two shrubs, it is worth reaching for a self-fertile cultivar, e.g. J.C. van Tol or Pyramidalis. A frequent cause of the lack of berries on a mature female specimen is also pruning carried out after flowering — it removes the developing fruit.
Will common holly survive a Polish winter?
It is a plant from the edge of our climatic zone — it is assigned zone 7a, that is a minimum of about −18 °C. In western Poland and the coastal belt, including the Szczecin, Poznań and Wrocław areas, in a position sheltered from freezing wind and winter sun it usually overwinters well; the further east, and the higher into the foothills and mountains, the greater the risk of frost damage. In harsh, snowless winters it suffers frost damage, especially when young. Mulching the base, watering generously before the frosts arrive and shielding with horticultural fleece in the first years all help. Of the cultivars, Alaska has the best reputation for hardiness.
Are holly berries toxic?
Yes. The berries and leaves contain saponins and alkaloids, including ilicin. In children, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea have been described after eating just two berries, and a larger amount risks dehydration and drowsiness. Serious poisonings are rare, but the bright berries are very tempting to children — Christmas arrangements with holly branches should be kept out of their reach, and likewise away from dogs and cats, in which the plant causes vomiting and diarrhoea.
When and how should holly be pruned?
Best in early spring, before growth begins; a hedge can additionally be tidied in the second half of summer. Holly tolerates even hard pruning well and regenerates from old wood, so a neglected shrub can be rejuvenated. It should not be pruned in autumn or during frosts. On female specimens it must be remembered that hard pruning after flowering removes the developing berries — if we want the winter decoration, we then limit ourselves to correcting individual shoots. We always work in thick gloves.
Will holly grow in shade?
Yes — this is one of its strongest points. It tolerates partial shade, and also deep shade beneath a tree canopy, where most ornamental shrubs grow poorly. It must be remembered, however, that shade tolerance concerns growth, not fruiting: the darker it is, the sparser the flowering and the fewer the red berries, so a female specimen planted for winter decoration is better placed in partial shade or a bright spot. The exception is cultivars with cream- or yellow-margined leaves: in too dark a spot they lose the contrast and turn green. Holly grows in full sun too, but in winter it is then more prone to desiccation and browning of the leaves, which is why in Poland a partly shaded and sheltered position is more reliable.
