Characteristics
A bulbous plant with narrow, lance-shaped leaves and a single, cup-shaped flower on a stiff stem. Flowers come in nearly every color except true blue. There are usually 3–4 leaves, less often 2 or 5–6; they are grey-green, covered with a waxy bloom, and grow alternately on the lower part of the stem. The perianth is made up of six tepals in two whorls, not differentiated into calyx and corolla — which is why botanists speak of tepals rather than petals; inside the flower there are six stamens and a superior ovary with a three-lobed stigma. The flower opens in full sun and closes in the evening and in cool weather — a response to the change in temperature, not to light itself. The height of 25–60 cm depends above all on the cultivar group: early and double cultivars stay at the lower end of the range, while Darwin hybrids and single late tulips reach 60 cm. Growth is fast but the cycle is short — the flower itself lasts 2–3 weeks, and the whole above-ground part dries off by June, when the plant enters summer dormancy. The bulb renews itself each season: the old one dies after flowering and is replaced by a daughter bulb with offsets, which is why the flowers of large-flowered cultivars get smaller year by year. Contractile roots can pull the bulb deeper into the soil. The flower bud forms inside the bulb as early as summer, during the warm dormancy after the leaves have dried off; to push that bud out and extend the stem, however, the plant needs winter chill — usually 12–16 weeks at around 5–9 °C. Without that chill the bud stays inside the bulb or flowers stunted just above the ground, and the plant produces mainly leaves. A sunny position or bright partial shade, well-drained soil with a neutral reaction, slightly acidic also tolerated (pH 6.0–7.5).

- A single late tulip with velvety, deep purple tepals that look almost black. Reaches 55–60 cm and flowers in May, after most other cultivars — good for contrast with white and yellow tulips.

- A lily-flowered tulip with a slender bloom and reflexed, pointed tepals in orange. Height 50–55 cm, flowering late; one of the few cultivars with a distinct, sweet fragrance.

- A double late tulip with a densely filled, pale pink flower resembling a peony. Shorter, at 40–45 cm, and long-flowering, but the heavy flowers are easily flattened by rain — better planted in a sheltered spot.

- A Triumph group tulip with an orange flower marked by a distinct purple flame on the outer tepals. Low, 30–35 cm, flowering mid-season; works well in containers and at the front of a border.

Bulbs rot in waterlogged soil. Water moderately during the growing period, then cut back to a minimum after flowering.

Diseases and pests
A grey-brown, fluffy coating of mycelium on flowers, fruit, leaves and shoots, preceded by watery, rotting spots. It attacks weakened and damaged tissue and develops rapidly in humidity and cool conditions and where air circulation is poor. Common on strawberries, begonias, peonies and roses. The coating is characteristically 'mousy' — fluffy and ashy grey, and when the infected tissue is knocked a visible cloud of spores (conidia) puffs up, which is a diagnostic feature of this disease. Infection usually starts in the weakest tissues: fading petals, wounds, hail marks or pest feeding damage, as well as pollen residue settled on the petals. Small, brown, watery spots appear on the flowers and quickly engulf the whole bloom ('flower blight'); from the infected flower the fungus often grows down into the shoot, causing it to constrict and die back. On soft fruit (strawberry, raspberry, grapes, tomato) a watery, browning rot develops, covered with a thick layer of grey, fluffy felt — the berry softens and 'dissolves'. On seedlings and cuttings Botrytis causes basal stem rot and the sudden collapse of plants. In older, dying mycelium and on plant debris hard, black, irregular lumps form — sclerotia (resting bodies), by which the pathogen overwinters in the soil and in plant debris. The disease also shows up after harvest, as a rapidly advancing storage rot of fruit and vegetables.
Bacterial soft rotInfected fleshy organs — bulbs, tubers, storage roots and succulent stems — rot wet, turning into a slimy, watery, soft mass with a characteristic, unpleasant, putrid smell. The tissue disintegrates, and the skin often remains as a thin bag filled with decomposed flesh. The disease progresses rapidly in warmth and high humidity, especially in storage; it affects onion, garlic, tulip, daffodil, hyacinth and root vegetables. The first symptom is small, translucent, seemingly water-soaked spots that quickly turn brown and soften; at the site of infection the flesh becomes macerated — the bacteria break down the substances that cement the cell walls, so the tissue loses its cohesion and dissolves into a creamy-brown mush. In cross-section the boundary between healthy and diseased tissue is watery and blurred, and a cloudy, slimy ooze often seeps from the injury. In bulbs and the neck of bulbous plants the infection usually starts from the top or from a wound and descends deeper, producing a soft, slippery 'neck'; in potato, soft rot of the tubers links up with blackleg — the blackening, rotting base of the shoot. The bacterium itself does not form mycelium or a visible bloom — this distinguishes it from fungal rot — and the intense stench comes from secondary decomposition by other microorganisms. Symptoms progress fastest at temperatures above about 20°C, with poor ventilation and a film of water present on the surface of the organs.
Mosaic (viral disease)A characteristic mosaic appears on the leaves — irregular, interweaving light and dark green or yellow patches and streaks. The leaves are often deformed, wrinkled, curled and smaller, and whole plants become stunted and fruit poorly. The symptoms are most visible on young leaves, and the fruit of cucumber, courgette or tomato may be blotchy and misshapen. The disease affects many vegetables, perennials and ornamental plants. The disease picture depends on the specific virus, the host species and the temperature — the same pathogen produces different symptoms on different plants. A distinguishing feature is that the mosaic is systemic (it affects the whole plant and develops from the youngest leaves) rather than localised like fungal leaf spots — there are no clearly delimited spots with a margin, no mycelial coating and no fruiting bodies. Besides the mosaic, there is vein clearing (a lightening of the tissue along the veins), striping and blister-like bulges of the leaf blade. Severe narrowing and thread-like tomato leaves (the so-called 'shoestring' symptom) is associated mainly with CMV (cucumber mosaic virus), occasionally with tobamoviruses, whereas TMV/ToMV mostly produce mosaic and mottling of the leaves. On the fruit you can observe blotching, concentric rings, wart-like bulges (cucumber) and uneven ripening (tomato), and on the flowers of ornamental plants — colour breaking, i.e. streaks and flecks of discolouration on the petals. In high temperatures (above ~28–30°C) the symptoms may become masked and temporarily disappear, only to return once it cools down — this does not mean the plant has recovered.
AphidsSmall (1–3 mm) soft-bodied insects, green, black or pink, feeding in clusters on young shoots and the underside of leaves. They excrete sticky honeydew. The diagnostic feature that distinguishes aphids from other small sucking insects is the pair of siphunculi (tubular projections) at the rear of the abdomen together with a tail-like cauda; a single colony usually holds wingless forms (parthenogenetic females) alongside winged migrants that fly onto new plants in summer. In summer aphids reproduce parthenogenetically and viviparously over many generations, so the population builds up explosively; in autumn many species produce a sexual generation that lays overwintering eggs on the host, and host-alternating species move between a winter host (often a tree or shrub) and a summer host (a herbaceous plant). Feeding symptoms include curling, crinkling and distortion of young leaves, stunted growth, yellowing, and the shedding of buds and fruitlets. Abundant honeydew coats the leaves, and the sooty mould fungus that develops on it forms a black film which limits photosynthesis; the honeydew is fed on by ants, which in return defend the colony against predators. Aphids are also important vectors of plant viruses (mosaics among them), transmitting them from plant to plant even during a brief probing puncture.
VolesSmall rodents with a stocky body, short tail and blunt muzzle, about 9–13 cm long, active all year round. They dig shallow tunnels just below the soil surface. Symptoms: gnawed roots and bark at the base of trees and shrubs (girdling of trunks under the snow in winter), eaten-out bulbs and tubers, dying plants that pull out of the ground easily, and small mounds of excavated soil with numerous shallow burrow openings linked by nibbled runways in the grass. In garden practice the name refers above all to the plant-eating field voles of the genus Microtus. Their fur is grey-brown to reddish-brown, and their small but clearly visible eyes and ears distinguish them from the mole. They breed exceptionally fast — a female produces several litters of several young per season, which mature within a few weeks — so numbers can rise sharply in multi-year cycles (outbreak years), when the damage becomes severe. They do not hibernate; the worst losses occur in late autumn, winter and early spring, when green food is scarce and they switch to roots, bark and bulbs overwintering in the soil. Under the snow cover, sheltered from predators, they gnaw the bark around the base of young trees (girdling), which after the thaw shows up as sudden wilting or death of the tree. Most at risk are young fruit and ornamental trees (especially apple trees on weak-growing rootstocks), tulip and crocus bulbs, tubers, root vegetables, perennials, and plants stored in clamps and compost heaps; daffodil bulbs, being poisonous, are usually left alone. Characteristic signs are the even, smooth tooth marks on roots and bark, roots cut off just below the soil surface, and a network of shallow runs with numerous open exits — unlike the mole, whose mounds have no entrance hole.

History and origin
The tulip originates from the mountains of Central Asia and reached Europe in the 16th century via the Ottoman Empire. In 17th-century Holland it sparked the famous "tulip mania" — a speculative price frenzy over the bulbs of rare cultivars. The genus name most likely derives from the Persian dulband, meaning turban, to which the shape of the flower was compared; in Turkish the tulip is called lale. The species epithet commemorates Conrad Gesner, who in 1559 described a tulip flowering in a garden in Augsburg. Shipments of bulbs and seeds from Constantinople are traditionally linked with the imperial envoy Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq, although more recent research questions his role as the first importer. The decisive figure was Carolus Clusius: after arriving in Leiden in 1593 and laying out the botanical garden there, planted up a year later, he established a tulip collection from which Dutch breeding and the bulb trade began. In the Ottoman Empire the tulip was a courtly flower and a frequent motif in applied art, and the years 1718–1730 went down in history as the Tulip Era; the Ottoman ideal of the flower, with narrow, dagger-pointed tepals, differed clearly from the rounded Dutch type.
Uses
For spring borders, bulb displays, pots, and balcony boxes, as well as for cut flowers. They are planted in groups of a dozen or more bulbs of a single cultivar, 10–15 cm apart and about 12 cm deep, roughly three times the height of the bulb; on heavy soil a handful of sand placed under the bulb helps. In containers, layered planting works well: tulips at the bottom, grape hyacinths (Muscari) and crocuses above — a single container then flowers for several weeks. Good border partners are forget-me-not (Myosotis), pansies and grape hyacinths as a low backdrop, along with perennials that spread out in May and June — hostas, coral bells (Heuchera) or ferns — which hide the yellowing leaves. Cultivars are organized into fifteen horticultural groups under the KAVB classification, which makes it easier to choose height and flowering time. Large-flowered cultivars get smaller over time: Darwin hybrids and low botanical tulips persist longest in the ground, while double, parrot and fringed cultivars weaken noticeably and are replanted from scratch every year. For cut flowers the stems are cut at the colored-bud stage — tulips keep growing in the vase and bend toward the light. Where voles and mice forage, the bulbs are planted in wire baskets.
Trivia
- At the height of tulip mania (1637), a single bulb of a rare cultivar cost as much as a house in Amsterdam.
- The Netherlands exports more than 2 billion tulip bulbs a year.
- The flame-like patterns of the most expensive tulips of tulip mania, such as Semper Augustus, were caused by tulip breaking virus — today infected plants are removed from cultivation, and a similar look is provided by healthy, genetically stable multicolored cultivars, often sold under the trade name Rembrandt.
- During the hunger winter of 1944/1945 in occupied Holland, tulip bulbs were eaten for lack of any other food — after the core was removed they were dried and ground into flour according to official instructions. This is not a recipe to repeat: tulip bulbs are poisonous and, despite removal of the core, poisonings were recorded at the time.
Frequently asked questions
Do tulip bulbs need to be dug up for winter?
In most of Poland's climate this usually isn't necessary — tulips are cold-hardy. Digging up is mainly recommended for valuable cultivars or on very wet soils, where bulbs could rot.
Why didn't my tulip bloom in its second year?
The most common cause is cutting the leaves back too early after the first bloom — the leaves need to yellow naturally so the bulb can build up reserves for the next season.
Are tulips safe for dogs?
No — the tulip bulb is moderately toxic to dogs and cats. It's worth planting them where pets can't reach them.
When and how deep should tulip bulbs be planted?
From September to November, as long as the soil hasn't frozen — ideally once its temperature drops to around 10 °C. Planting in soil that is still too warm favors fungal diseases, while planting too late shortens the time needed for rooting before the frosts. Depth and spacing as for border planting: about 12 cm deep, 10–15 cm apart, with the tip of the bulb facing up.
What should I do with potted tulips after they finish flowering?
Remove the spent flower and look after the leaves until they yellow naturally (see the question about no bloom in the second year). Then lift the bulbs, clean and dry them, and store them in a dry, airy place until autumn, when they are planted out in the ground. Forced bulbs rarely flower as well the following year — better to move them to a border than to force them again. When sorting bulbs for any length of time it is worth wearing gloves: the sap from the scales irritates the skin in some people.
