Mossy saxifrage (Saxifraga × arendsii) is a group of garden hybrids rather than a botanical species — it arose from repeated crossing of European tufted saxifrages in the German nursery of Georg Arends. It forms a dense, moss-like cushion of evergreen rosettes only a few centimeters tall and 20–30 cm wide, above which thin flower stalks rise from April to June bearing small, five-petalled flowers in white, pink or red — with them the plant stands 10–20 cm high. Unlike most rock-garden plants it prefers partial shade and soil that stays evenly, moderately moist yet strictly free-draining.

Characteristics

A cushion-forming perennial built from densely packed, tiny leaf rosettes that from a distance look deceptively like a clump of moss — hence the group's name in German and English (Moos-Steinbrech, mossy saxifrage). A single leaf is 1–2 cm long and deeply divided into three to five narrow lobes; the rosettes sit so tightly that they form a firm, springy surface only a few centimeters tall. It spreads by short lateral shoots that root where they touch the ground, so a single cutting produces a flat carpet 20–30 cm across. The foliage is evergreen, so the cushion covers the soil in winter as well. From April to June, peaking in May, thin, almost leafless stalks rise above the mat, carrying the flowers 10–20 cm above the ground; each bears several cup-shaped, five-petalled flowers about 1–1.5 cm across, and the color depends entirely on the cultivar — from pure white through shades of pink to deep red. Because this is a group of hybrids rather than a species, the cultivars differ in height (the extremes fall between 5 and 25 cm, with 10–20 cm typical of the group), in the density of the cushion, and in flowering time, so the label of a specific cultivar tells you more than an averaged description of the whole group. It is clearly distinguished from the other saxifrages grown in gardens: encrusted saxifrage (Saxifraga paniculata) has stiff, spoon-shaped leaves with a chalky, silvery deposit along the margins and flowers later, in June and July; London pride (Saxifraga umbrosa) forms flat rosettes of leathery, scalloped leaves; strawberry saxifrage (Saxifraga stolonifera) propagates by long, thread-like runners and is grown here as a houseplant. Its habitat requirements depart from the pattern of a typical rock-garden plant: it tolerates full sun only where the substrate stays consistently, moderately moist, and in our climate partial shade with morning sun is the safer choice. Its cold hardiness spans zones 5a–7b, so in Poland the saxifrage overwinters without cover; the upper limit of this range is set not by cold but by heat — in a climate with hot, humid summers the cushions rot and die out.

Watering

It does not tolerate drying out: in drought the cushion browns from the center and does not rebuild in the same season. Equally dangerous, however, is excess water — on heavy, waterlogged soil the rosettes rot, most often in late autumn and winter. Water moderately but regularly, at the base of the cushion; in troughs and bowls check the moisture daily during hot spells.

Planting

A substrate that is at once free-draining and rich in humus: mix heavy soil with grit or coarse sand, because standing water kills this plant faster than drought. Plant so that the necks of the rosettes are at ground level rather than buried, and mulch the surface with a thin layer of grit.

Remove the spent flower stalks just above the cushion — without this the mat looks untidy and the plant wastes energy setting seed. Cut dried-out and fallen fragments back to healthy rosettes, and top up the resulting gaps with free-draining soil so that neighboring shoots root into it.

Root rot (Phytophthora root rot)

The disease develops in overly wet, poorly aerated substrate and attacks the roots and the base of the stem. The roots turn brown, rot and lose their bark, which slips off easily, and a dark, watery rot appears at the stem base. The above-ground part wilts, yellows and dies back despite moist soil – a characteristic symptom, because the damaged roots no longer take up water. Especially at risk are houseplants, succulents and cacti (from overwatering), and in the ground conifers, rhododendrons, ericaceous plants and strawberries on waterlogged sites. The process begins inconspicuously at the root hairs and root tips, which darken and disappear, after which the rot advances towards the framework roots and the root collar. Healthy, pale, active roots waste away — what remains is a dark, rusty-brown or blackish, watery mass, and the outer layer of the root bark slips off like a glove, exposing the discoloured central cylinder. In trees and shrubs, infection of the collar and the base of the trunk (stem-base rot) shows as a dark, often streaking patch, sometimes with oozing, and the bark there is moist and sunken; in conifers and rhododendrons, browning and dieback are seen from the bottom or from the centre of the crown while the soil is still moist. Characteristic is the nested (patchy) occurrence of symptoms in the bed — where water and the pathogen accumulate locally. It is worth distinguishing the two causal oomycete genera: Pythium mainly attacks seedlings and fine roots, causing damping-off and root rot in cool, wet substrate, whereas Phytophthora also attacks older, woody plants, framework roots and the collar, more strongly in warmer, water-saturated soil. Key for diagnosis is the contradiction of the symptoms: the plant wilts and looks 'dry', although the substrate is wet — this results from the destruction of the roots, not from a shortage of water.

Aphids

Small (1–3 mm) soft-bodied insects, green, black or pink, feeding in clusters on young shoots and the underside of leaves. They excrete sticky honeydew. The diagnostic feature that distinguishes aphids from other small sucking insects is the pair of siphunculi (tubular projections) at the rear of the abdomen together with a tail-like cauda; a single colony usually holds wingless forms (parthenogenetic females) alongside winged migrants that fly onto new plants in summer. In summer aphids reproduce parthenogenetically and viviparously over many generations, so the population builds up explosively; in autumn many species produce a sexual generation that lays overwintering eggs on the host, and host-alternating species move between a winter host (often a tree or shrub) and a summer host (a herbaceous plant). Feeding symptoms include curling, crinkling and distortion of young leaves, stunted growth, yellowing, and the shedding of buds and fruitlets. Abundant honeydew coats the leaves, and the sooty mould fungus that develops on it forms a black film which limits photosynthesis; the honeydew is fed on by ants, which in return defend the colony against predators. Aphids are also important vectors of plant viruses (mosaics among them), transmitting them from plant to plant even during a brief probing puncture.

Slugs and snails

Slugs and shelled snails that feed at night and after rain. Symptoms: irregular holes in the leaves and young seedlings eaten off completely, silvery slime trails on leaves and soil. The greatest damage occurs in damp, shaded spots — particularly on lettuce, strawberries and hostas. The most damaging in gardens are the slugs (which lack an external shell): the Spanish slug (Arion vulgaris, formerly described as A. lusitanicus) and the grey field slug (Deroceras reticulatum). The leopard slug (Limax maximus) can be morphologically similar to them, but it feeds mainly on decaying organic matter and fungi and may even prey on other slugs, so it is of little importance as a pest of living plants. Shelled forms — grove snails (Cepaea) or the protected Roman snail (Helix pomatia) — usually cause less damage. The body is soft, elongated and permanently covered in slime; on the head there are two pairs of retractable tentacles — the longer upper pair bears the eyes, the shorter lower pair serves a tactile and olfactory function. Slugs and snails are hermaphrodites: they lay spherical, transparent or pearly eggs in clusters, hidden in damp soil, under stones and in leaf litter. A single Spanish slug can lay several hundred eggs; both eggs and young slugs overwinter, and feeding lasts from spring to late autumn, intensifying on warm, damp nights. The damage has smooth edges and often appears in the middle of the leaf blade, not only from the margin; seedlings and transplants are sometimes eaten down to bare soil, and on strawberries and ripening vegetables the slugs gnaw hollows into the fruit. The decisive diagnostic sign is the dried, silvery glistening slime trail — no insect leaves one.

Vine weevils

Weevils 8-12 mm long, black or dark brown, with a short, broad snout, flightless and active at night. Their larvae are white, legless, C-shaped, with a brown head, and live in the soil. Symptoms: the adult beetles notch characteristic semicircular bites into leaf margins at night (box, rhododendron, bergenia, strawberry, houseplants), while the larvae gnaw at roots, bulbs and the base of shoots, causing the plant to wilt suddenly and die. The most common is the black vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus), more rarely the strawberry root weevil (O. ovatus) and related species. A key factor behind their numbers is parthenogenetic reproduction (virgin birth): populations consist almost exclusively of females, and a single female lays several hundred eggs into the soil without a male, so an outbreak builds up quickly. Life cycle: the beetles overwinter mainly as larvae (some as adults) in the soil; the adults emerge in late spring and early summer and for about 3-4 weeks carry out maturation feeding on the leaves before they begin to lay eggs, while the larvae feed on roots from summer through autumn and again in early spring. The larval stage is the most dangerous - the larvae chew the roots and gnaw the root collar at the base of the shoot (girdling), causing the plant to wilt suddenly despite moist soil and to lift easily out of the substrate; adult feeding (semicircular notches on leaf margins) mainly disfigures the plant and rarely kills it. Plants in containers are particularly at risk, where the limited root ball is quickly destroyed. The beetles are flightless, so they spread by walking across the substrate and - above all - with infested plants and substrate, which makes newly bought potted plants the main route of introduction.

Spider mites

Tiny (0.3–0.5 mm) arachnids, hard to spot with the naked eye, feeding on the underside of leaves. Symptoms: fine, pale speckling (feeding punctures); over time the leaves turn grey, yellow and dry out. Under heavy infestation a fine webbing becomes visible. Warm, dry air favours their development — a common problem for houseplants in winter near radiators. Spider mites are not insects but mites of the family Tetranychidae — adults have 8 legs (larvae only 6). The most common in cultivation is the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae): yellowish-green females carry two dark spots on the sides of the body, while overwintering females turn orange-red. In orchards the fruit tree red spider mite (Panonychus ulmi) is frequent, whose red eggs overwinter in clusters on the bark of the shoots. Feeding mechanism: the mites puncture the cells of the epidermis and mesophyll on the underside of the leaf and suck out their contents, and the emptied cells fill with air — hence the characteristic, silvery-grey, fine speckling visible from the upper side of the blade (resembling a mosaic discolouration). At high numbers the leaves turn brown, curl and drop prematurely, and the whole plant weakens and loses its growth. Dense webbing spun between the leaves and shoot tips appears only under an advanced attack and is a sign of the risk of the pest spreading to neighbouring plants. The development cycle is very fast in warmth and drought — at a temperature of 25–30°C a single generation can be completed in 1–2 weeks, hence the numerous generations per season and the rapid, exponential build-up of the population. Females lay spherical, transparent eggs on the underside of the leaves. Fertilised females overwinter (in bark crevices, leaf litter and plant debris) or — in the fruit tree red spider mite — the eggs on the bark. Early infestation is easy to miss; diagnosis is helped by shaking a leaf over a white sheet of paper (moving specks become visible) or examining the underside of the leaf with a magnifying glass.

History and origin

The group's name commemorates Georg Arends (1863–1952), a German perennial breeder who in 1888 founded, in Ronsdorf — today a district of Wuppertal — the first German perennial nursery and left behind some 350 new plant cultivars. The Arends saxifrages were raised at his nursery from repeated crossing of European tufted saxifrages of the section Dactyloides, chiefly Saxifraga exarata subsp. moschata and Saxifraga rosacea, with the involvement of Saxifraga hypnoides. Sources give slightly different sets of parent species, because the cultivars were created over decades and their pedigrees were not consistently documented — the name therefore functions as a collective term for the group rather than a strictly defined taxon. The founding species grow in the mountains of Europe, from the British Isles to the Alps and the Pyrenees, and it is from them that the hybrids inherited their fondness for cool conditions, moisture and stony ground; this mountain provenance explains why the plant fails in a hot, dry spot even though it reaches gardens as a "rock plant." The same breeder gave gardens the Arends astilbe (Astilbe × arendsii), so his name appears in the atlas twice. Breeding eventually split along two paths: the older German cultivars propagated vegetatively (Blütenteppich, Schneeteppich, Purpurteppich) are regarded as more compact-growing and longer-lived, while the newer seed series — such as Touran or Highlander — produce uniform plants that flower in their first year and are suited to container cultivation.

Uses

Its basic use is the rock garden, the top and crevices of a dry wall, the edges of shaded paths and the gaps between paving slabs — anywhere the roots can reach into a cool crevice and the cushion can drape over the stone. It is planted at about 9 per square meter, spaced 25–33 cm apart; the gaps usually close in the second season. Exposure is crucial: north- and east-facing banks and walls are best, while the south side of heated stone is the most common cause of failure — the cushion scorches in July and August. The surface around the plants is mulched with a thin layer of grit or gravel: it drains water away from the rosette necks and keeps the flowers clean after rain. Bark should not be used right at the mat. The plant does not tolerate being walked on, so between paving slabs it is planted at the edges — for genuinely trafficked spots, thyme is the choice. It also does well in troughs and bowls, provided they have a drainage hole and shelter from the midday sun: in a small volume of soil, drying out happens over the course of a single hot day. Good partners are coral bells, evergreen sedges and small ferns with the same light requirements, and low, early-spring-flowering bulbs push up nicely through the cushion. It should not be combined in one pocket of the rock garden with stonecrops, houseleeks and thyme: these plants need dry ground and tolerate prolonged drought, so the watering regime that is right for one side is lethal to the other. This is the most common mistake in mixed rock gardens bought "as a set."

Trivia

  • The genus name Saxifraga means literally "stone-breaker" (Latin saxum — stone, frangere — to break). It is explained in two ways: either from the habit of growing into rock crevices, or from a medieval doctrine of signatures — the bulbils of meadow saxifrage resembled kidney stones, so the plant was used against urinary stones.
  • Georg Arends founded his nursery in 1888, and it was the first perennial nursery in Germany; it operates to this day in the same place in Wuppertal-Ronsdorf.
  • The German names of the Arends cultivars are purely descriptive and easy to decode: Blütenteppich means "carpet of bloom," Schneeteppich — "carpet of snow," and Purpurteppich — "carpet of purple."

Frequently asked questions

Why does the saxifrage turn brown and die out in the middle of the cushion?

Two causes overlap. The first is natural: after 2–3 years the oldest part of the cushion, in the center, dies off, because the plant grows outward at the edge. The second is drying out or scorching in the midday sun — once the rosettes have turned brown they will not recover in the same season. This is prevented by a site in partial shade, regular watering, and topping the clump each year with a thin layer of free-draining soil, which lets the shoots root anew. A clump with a dead center is best rejuvenated by division.

Is Arends saxifrage suitable for a sunny rock garden?

Only conditionally. It tolerates full sun only where the substrate stays consistently, moderately moist — in a cooler climate and over a deeper layer of soil. In Polish conditions partial shade is the safer choice: morning sun and shade at midday. On the south face of a heated wall the cushion scorches in July and August, even if it has been watered. This is the main difference from stonecrops, houseleeks and moss phlox, which thrive in the very same spot.

When and how should Arends saxifrage be pruned?

After flowering, in June or July, you remove only the spent flower stalks just above the cushion — this is the only regular cut the plant needs. The evergreen mat is not trimmed in autumn or winter, because it is what protects the root necks. Dried-out fragments are cut out separately, back to healthy rosettes, and soil is topped up in those spots.

How do you propagate Arends saxifrage?

The simplest way is dividing the clump from June to August, or rooting single rosettes as cuttings in September and October — rosettes cut off with a piece of shoot root easily in a free-draining substrate. Sowing seed makes sense only for the seed series: Arends saxifrage is a group of hybrids, so seedlings from named cultivars do not repeat the color or habit of the mother plant.

Is Arends saxifrage frost-hardy?

Yes — the recommended range is zones 5a–7b, which covers all of Poland, and the plant overwinters in the ground without cover. Far more dangerous than cold itself is winter wetness: on heavy, waterlogged soil the rosettes rot in late autumn and winter, which is why free-draining soil matters more than any cover. The cushion stays green through winter, though in frosty, snowless spells it may partly turn brown.
