The miniature rose (Rosa, Miniature Group) is the horticultural group of the smallest roses, usually growing to 20-40 cm and sold mainly as a flowering pot plant. It descends from a dwarf form of the China rose (Rosa chinensis 'Minima'), not from hybrid tea roses, and it is propagated from cuttings, so it grows on its own roots, without a rootstock. Despite being sold in pots it remains a frost-hardy garden shrub that needs a cool rest period in winter rather than a warm windowsill.

Characteristics

The smallest horticultural group within the genus Rosa: a compact, densely branched shrub, usually 20-40 cm tall and wide, with a rounded habit. Every part of the plant is scaled down in proportion - the leaf is odd-pinnate, made up of 5-7 small, toothed leaflets rarely longer than 2 cm, and the stems are thin, with numerous but small and relatively soft prickles. The flowers are most often 2-4 cm across, usually double, and borne several together in loose clusters at the tips of the shoots; in commercial cultivars flowering repeats in flushes throughout the season, from June until the first frosts. The miniature size is a genetic trait, not the result of growing in a small container - a plant set out in the ground will not grow to the size of a bedding rose. Fragrance depends entirely on the cultivar: plants from mass pot production, sold without a cultivar name, are in practice scentless, and it is this typical plant that the present profile describes, while among collectors' cultivars there are also distinctly fragrant ones such as 'Sweet Chariot'. The key technical difference from hybrid tea roses lies in the way the plants are produced: miniatures are propagated from stem cuttings and sold on their own roots rather than budded onto a rootstock of a wild rose. The consequences are purely practical - the shrub never throws suckers, there is no bud union to bury at planting, and regrowth from the base after the stems have been killed by frost gives the same cultivar, not the rootstock. The plant is deciduous: in cool conditions it drops its leaves and goes dormant, whereas kept all winter in a warm room it carries on growing but produces thin, drawn stems and loses its compact shape. It requires full sun, that is a minimum of about six hours of direct light a day, and fertile, free-draining soil with a pH close to neutral.

A cultivar from the French Meilland nursery, introduced in 1965. Orange-red, double flowers on a compact shrub about 30-40 cm tall. One of the most highly rated miniatures and one of the longest kept in cultivation; it takes well to being planted in the ground, not only to pot culture.
‘Baby Masquerade’
Bred by Tantau in 1956, traded also as Baby Maskerade. The flowers change colour as they develop: they open yellow, then turn pink and red, so that several shades can be seen on one shrub at the same time. Compact growth, about 30-40 cm - a classic of European nurseries.
‘Cinderella’
Raised in 1953 by the Dutchman Jan de Vink, one of the creators of the modern miniatures. Very small, densely double flowers, white with a pink flush, on stems almost free of prickles. One of the lowest cultivars in the group, about 25-30 cm, good for shallow containers and for a windowsill.
‘Sweet Chariot’
A Ralph Moore cultivar from 1984. Small, densely double flowers in a lavender-purple shade, borne in numerous clusters and strongly fragrant - one of the few distinctly scented cultivars in a group whose mass-produced pot plants have practically no fragrance. The stems are long and arching, so it looks good in hanging containers.
‘Green Ice’
Ralph Moore, 1971. The flowers open white and take on a greenish tint with age, which is where the name comes from. The habit is broad and arching, distinctly wider than that of a typical miniature - it looks best at the edge of a pot or in a hanging basket.
‘Rise ’n’ Shine’
Ralph Moore, 1977. Pure yellow, double flowers of regular, classic form on a compact shrub about 30-40 cm tall. One of the most recognisable yellow miniatures, honoured many times in American cultivar trials.

Watering

In a small pot the root ball dries out very quickly - in summer check the moisture daily and water once the top layer of the compost has dried out. Water at the base of the plant, not over the leaves; water standing in the saucer leads to root rot. During the cool rest period water only enough to keep the root ball from drying out completely.

Planting

Pruning

Cut out the stems that are dead, as thin as a matchstick or pointing into the centre of the bush, and shorten the rest by about a third, making a slanting cut above an outward-facing bud. Every few years single, oldest and clearly woody stems can be cut out just above ground level, so that the shrub regrows from the base.

Timing: Early spring, before the buds develop (March). Diseases and pests

Powdery mildew

A white, powdery coating on leaves, shoots and buds. The leaves turn yellow, become deformed and drop prematurely. The coating develops on both sides of the leaf blade, is often clearly visible from above, and can easily be rubbed off with a finger — it is the superficial mycelium of an ectoparasite that draws nutrients from the epidermal cells by means of feeding structures (haustoria). At first single, round, white spots appear, which in time merge and cover the entire leaf surface and the young growth. Young leaves and the current season's shoots are the most susceptible; heavy infection causes them to pucker, stiffen and stop growing, and on buds it leads to deformation or death of the flowers. On the fruit of some species (gooseberry, apple, cucurbits) the coating leaves russeting or a corky skin. Towards the end of the season, small, dark fruiting bodies (chasmothecia, formerly called cleistothecia) — the pathogen's overwintering structures — appear within the coating. The disease affects many plants, including roses, oak, privet, lilac, cucurbits, cereals, grapevine, apple, gooseberry, phlox and coneflowers, with each of these hosts being infected by a specialised species of fungus.

Rose black spot

Black to dark-brown spots with ragged margins on rose leaves, surrounded by yellowing of the leaf blade. Infected leaves drop in large numbers, weakening the plant and reducing flowering. The disease intensifies in wet seasons and where air circulation is poor. The spots are usually round, from a few millimetres to about 1-1.5 cm across, and their most important diagnostic feature is the radially fringed, feathery margin - the mycelium spreads beneath the leaf cuticle in all directions, producing the characteristic 'star-shaped' edge (hence the German name Sternrußtau). Under heavy infection the spots merge into larger, irregular patches, and the surrounding yellowing spreads across more and more of the blade until the whole leaf turns yellow and drops. Small, dark conidial fruiting bodies (acervuli) appear on the upper surface of the spots, while the underside of the leaf remains free of any coating. Symptoms appear first on the lower, oldest leaves and gradually move up the shrub, because the spores are carried by water splashing up from the soil and from lower leaves. Small, purplish-red discolorations and blotches may appear on young, green shoots. Prolonged wetting of the leaves for several hours is required for the spores to germinate and infect, which is why the disease breaks out after warm, rainy spells. Repeated defoliation exhausts the shrub, limits flowering and worsens winter hardiness.

Rust

Rusty-orange to brown, powdery clusters of spores on the underside of leaves, matched on the upper side by yellow spots. Heavily infected leaves turn yellow and drop prematurely, and the plant weakens. It affects roses and mallows among others, and some rusts have an alternate host (for example pear rust and juniper). The pustules (clusters of summer spores, the so-called uredinia) break through the leaf skin and release an orange-rust powder that rubs off onto the finger - this is the most reliable identifying feature. In high summer they appear mainly on the underside of the blade, along the veins and on the leaf stalks, and in some species also on green shoots and sepals. In late autumn the clusters darken to brownish-black - these are the overwintering spores (telia) by which the fungus survives winter on plant debris. Rusts are highly host-specific: a given rust usually infects only one species or genus of host, which is why the rusts of rose, mallow and marsh mallow, bean, leek and garlic, mint, pelargonium or lawn are different, non-interchangeable fungi. The general symptom - yellowing and premature leaf drop - weakens the plant and limits flowering and yield, though it rarely kills it within a single season.

Grey mould

A grey-brown, fluffy coating of mycelium on flowers, fruit, leaves and shoots, preceded by watery, rotting spots. It attacks weakened and damaged tissue and develops rapidly in humidity and cool conditions and where air circulation is poor. Common on strawberries, begonias, peonies and roses. The coating is characteristically 'mousy' — fluffy and ashy grey, and when the infected tissue is knocked a visible cloud of spores (conidia) puffs up, which is a diagnostic feature of this disease. Infection usually starts in the weakest tissues: fading petals, wounds, hail marks or pest feeding damage, as well as pollen residue settled on the petals. Small, brown, watery spots appear on the flowers and quickly engulf the whole bloom ('flower blight'); from the infected flower the fungus often grows down into the shoot, causing it to constrict and die back. On soft fruit (strawberry, raspberry, grapes, tomato) a watery, browning rot develops, covered with a thick layer of grey, fluffy felt — the berry softens and 'dissolves'. On seedlings and cuttings Botrytis causes basal stem rot and the sudden collapse of plants. In older, dying mycelium and on plant debris hard, black, irregular lumps form — sclerotia (resting bodies), by which the pathogen overwinters in the soil and in plant debris. The disease also shows up after harvest, as a rapidly advancing storage rot of fruit and vegetables.

Spider mites

Tiny (0.3–0.5 mm) arachnids, hard to spot with the naked eye, feeding on the underside of leaves. Symptoms: fine, pale speckling (feeding punctures); over time the leaves turn grey, yellow and dry out. Under heavy infestation a fine webbing becomes visible. Warm, dry air favours their development — a common problem for houseplants in winter near radiators. Spider mites are not insects but mites of the family Tetranychidae — adults have 8 legs (larvae only 6). The most common in cultivation is the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae): yellowish-green females carry two dark spots on the sides of the body, while overwintering females turn orange-red. In orchards the fruit tree red spider mite (Panonychus ulmi) is frequent, whose red eggs overwinter in clusters on the bark of the shoots. Feeding mechanism: the mites puncture the cells of the epidermis and mesophyll on the underside of the leaf and suck out their contents, and the emptied cells fill with air — hence the characteristic, silvery-grey, fine speckling visible from the upper side of the blade (resembling a mosaic discolouration). At high numbers the leaves turn brown, curl and drop prematurely, and the whole plant weakens and loses its growth. Dense webbing spun between the leaves and shoot tips appears only under an advanced attack and is a sign of the risk of the pest spreading to neighbouring plants. The development cycle is very fast in warmth and drought — at a temperature of 25–30°C a single generation can be completed in 1–2 weeks, hence the numerous generations per season and the rapid, exponential build-up of the population. Females lay spherical, transparent eggs on the underside of the leaves. Fertilised females overwinter (in bark crevices, leaf litter and plant debris) or — in the fruit tree red spider mite — the eggs on the bark. Early infestation is easy to miss; diagnosis is helped by shaking a leaf over a white sheet of paper (moving specks become visible) or examining the underside of the leaf with a magnifying glass.

Aphids

Small (1–3 mm) soft-bodied insects, green, black or pink, feeding in clusters on young shoots and the underside of leaves. They excrete sticky honeydew. The diagnostic feature that distinguishes aphids from other small sucking insects is the pair of siphunculi (tubular projections) at the rear of the abdomen together with a tail-like cauda; a single colony usually holds wingless forms (parthenogenetic females) alongside winged migrants that fly onto new plants in summer. In summer aphids reproduce parthenogenetically and viviparously over many generations, so the population builds up explosively; in autumn many species produce a sexual generation that lays overwintering eggs on the host, and host-alternating species move between a winter host (often a tree or shrub) and a summer host (a herbaceous plant). Feeding symptoms include curling, crinkling and distortion of young leaves, stunted growth, yellowing, and the shedding of buds and fruitlets. Abundant honeydew coats the leaves, and the sooty mould fungus that develops on it forms a black film which limits photosynthesis; the honeydew is fed on by ants, which in return defend the colony against predators. Aphids are also important vectors of plant viruses (mosaics among them), transmitting them from plant to plant even during a brief probing puncture.

Thrips

Very small (1–2 mm), slender, elongated insects with fringed wings, coloured yellow, brown or black; the larvae are pale yellow and wingless. They suck sap from the cells of leaves, petals and buds. Symptoms: silvery to silvery-grey streaks and blotches on the leaves, tiny black specks of excrement, and distortion of young leaves, buds and flowers. They are especially damaging under glass and on houseplants, and some species transmit plant viruses. The silvery sheen appears once the pest has sucked out the contents of the epidermal cells — the empty, air-filled cells reflect light like metallic streaks; they are accompanied by glistening black specks of excrement, which distinguish thrips feeding from that of most other sap-sucking pests. The mouthparts are piercing-sucking and asymmetric (only a single mandible), so the insect first rasps the tissue and then sucks up the exuding sap. On flowers, feeding produces white or brownish discolouration and distortion of the petals — severe on roses, chrysanthemums, orchids and cyclamens. The life cycle is short and, in warm conditions, the generations overlap: the females lay eggs inserted into the plant tissue, the larvae (two instars) feed on the leaves and then drop to the soil or litter, where they pass through the immobile prepupal and pupal stages. Among the most damaging are the western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) — a key greenhouse pest and vector of tospoviruses (including tomato spotted wilt, TSWV) — and the onion thrips (Thrips tabaci). Only the larvae acquire the viruses, while the adults transmit them, so reducing the larvae also lowers the risk of viral infection.

History and origin

Modern miniature roses descend from a dwarf form of the China rose, Rosa chinensis 'Minima', known in Europe as early as the beginning of the 19th century - it was then grown under the name Rosa lawranceana, commemorating the English botanical illustrator Mary Lawrance. This form almost disappeared from cultivation and returned to it only after the First World War, and its return consists of two separate events a few years apart. First, while the war was still on, the Swiss army doctor Dr Andre Roulet noticed it in pots on the windowsills of the Alpine village of Mauborget, where it was grown as a houseplant. It was brought into cultivation and into the trade only in 1922, by the Geneva nurseryman Henri Correvon, who named it Rosa rouletii in honour of its finder. Modern breeding began with that plant: from the 1930s the Dutchman Jan de Vink and the Catalan breeder Pedro Dot raised the first cultivars from it, and 'Peon', introduced in 1936, reached the American market as 'Tom Thumb'. The greatest influence on the group was that of the American Ralph Moore, who bred miniature roses for several decades at his Californian nursery in Visalia and introduced several hundred cultivars - he is credited with being the father of the modern miniatures. From the 1980s the group changed its market role: from a collectors' curiosity it became a mass-produced pot plant, sold in flower all year round in commercial series such as Kordana from the German breeder Kordes or Parade from the Danish firm Poulsen. Plants from these series usually reach the shops without a cultivar name - they are bought for the colour of the flower, not for the name.

Uses

Its basic use is growing in a pot - on a windowsill, balcony or terrace - and being sold as a flowering gift, a role in which this group of roses has practically no competition. It also works in the ground: as an edging to beds, on rock gardens and in low containers set beside paths, planted 25-35 cm apart. The commonest mistake is treating it like a tropical houseplant. It is a frost-hardy garden shrub with light requirements that a typical flat cannot meet: even at a south-facing window it grows markedly less well than outdoors, which is why from May to September the best place for it is a balcony, terrace or garden. In winter it needs a cool rest period a few degrees above freezing - on an unheated veranda, in a cold room or under cover on the balcony - and it is then watered only enough to keep the root ball from drying out completely. Plants bought in full flower go through a difficult period of adjustment: they come from glasshouses with high humidity and were brought on for a sales date, so once moved into a dry home they quickly go over and shed some of their leaves. It is then worth removing the spent flowers, standing the plant in the brightest place available and, once flowering is over, repotting it into a slightly larger container with fresh, free-draining compost - only after that can you see how it really grows. The cuttings packed together can be separated when repotting or left as a clump, accepting that the root ball will then dry out faster. The volume of compost is the main limitation here: in a container of 2-3 litres the root ball dries out within a dozen or so hours on a hot day, so in summer it is watered every 1-2 days, always at the base of the plant and never over the leaves - wet leaves in a warm, stuffy place are a direct route to powdery mildew and blackspot. The only exception is rinsing the leaves in the morning when spider mites have taken hold: done early in the day, it leaves the plant the whole day to dry off. A pot overwintering outdoors is wrapped in matting or stood inside a larger container filled with bark, because roots in a pot freeze sooner than in the ground; the hardiness zone given in this profile refers to plants growing in the soil. On a balcony the miniature rose combines well with low plants that have the same light requirements - catmint, woodland sage or marigold (Tagetes) - planted in separate containers, so that each has its own watering rhythm.

Trivia

How does a miniature rose differ from a hybrid tea rose?

The differences lie both in size and in the way the plants are produced. A miniature rose grows to 20-40 cm and has flowers 2-4 cm across, borne several together in clusters; a hybrid tea rose reaches 0.6-1.5 m, and its flowers, 10-12 cm across, are borne singly on long, stiff stalks - and it is these that are grown for cut flowers. How do you prune a miniature rose?

The main pruning is done in early spring, before the buds develop. First cut out the stems that are dead, frost-damaged, as thin as a matchstick or growing into the centre of the bush, then shorten the rest by about a third, making a slanting cut above an outward-facing bud. The miniature rose I bought quickly went over and is dropping its leaves - what should I do?

That is a typical reaction to the change in conditions. The plants are produced in glasshouses with high humidity and brought into full flower for a sales date, so once moved into a dry, warm home they go over within a few days to a couple of weeks and shed some of their leaves. Remove the spent flowers, move the plant to the brightest position you have, do not overwater it and check the undersides of the leaves for spider mites. Once flowering is over, repot the shrub into a container of at least 2-3 litres with fresh, free-draining compost, and after the last frosts stand it out on the balcony or terrace - in the open air it recovers quickly.

A fine webbing and pale mottling have appeared on the leaves of my miniature rose - what is it?

These are signs of spider mites feeding, the commonest pest of roses grown in pots. They are favoured by the warm, dry air of a heated home, which is why the problem gets worse in winter. The mites sit on the undersides of the leaves and are barely visible to the naked eye; what is characteristic is the fine, pale mottling on the upper surface of the leaf blade and the webbing in the angles of the shoots. Isolate the plant from the others and rinse the leaves with lukewarm water - in the morning, so that they have time to dry off before evening. This is the one exception to the rule of watering only at the base of the plant: leaves briefly wetted and quickly dried do not favour fungi, whereas leaves that stay wet overnight do. Then raise the humidity around the plant and use a product intended for controlling spider mites. Do not confuse this with powdery mildew, which produces a white, mealy coating on the upper surface of the leaves and on the buds. The most effective prevention is a summer spent outdoors - in moister air and with natural enemies present, spider mites rarely reach damaging numbers.
