The ground-cover rose (Rosa Ground Cover Group) is a horticultural group of roses with stems that creep along the ground or spread widely, planted in quantity to cover banks and large areas. It grows distinctly wider than it is tall - usually 30-80 cm high by 80-200 cm across - and flowers repeatedly from June until the first frosts. Unlike hybrid tea roses it needs minimal pruning: no more than the removal of dead and damaged wood each year, with harder cutting back only every 2-3 years. Most cultivars were selected for healthy foliage and for the speed with which they knit into a closed cover, rather than for fragrance or the size of an individual flower.

Characteristics

The ground-cover rose is not a botanical species but a horticultural group: nurseries sell under this name cultivars whose stems either lie flat on the ground or spread widely and arch down towards it. The shrub spreads distinctly wider than it grows tall - typically to 30-80 cm in height by 80-200 cm in width. The lowest cultivars barely lift off the ground, while the most vigorous ones, such as Swany, eventually occupy about two metres in diameter. This habit was largely inherited from Rosa wichuraiana - an East Asian species, today listed in taxonomic databases under the accepted name Rosa lucieae - whose stems in the wild trail over ground and rocks; from it also come the small, strongly glossy leaflets characteristic of most cultivars in this group. The leaf is odd-pinnate, usually with 5-7 glossy, toothed leaflets, and the smooth, waxy surface helps the blade dry more quickly after rain. The flowers are smaller than those of hybrid tea roses - from single, five-petalled blooms with exposed stamens to small, densely double rosettes - but they are produced in great numbers, in clusters, almost without a break from June until the first frosts. Flowering takes place on the current year's growth, and this is precisely what determines the pruning date. Fragrance was not the main aim of selection in this group: breeders rewarded healthy foliage, abundance of flowering and the speed with which the cover closes, so most cultivars are only faintly scented or not scented at all, and just a few more noticeably so. The stems are densely prickled - an advantage where the planting is meant to discourage people from cutting corners across it, and a serious drawback when weeding. The plant flowers best in full sun; it tolerates partial shade, but flowers less freely there, and leaves that dry more slowly are more readily colonised by powdery mildew. Average, free-draining garden soil with a pH of 6.0-7.0 is enough; it copes badly with standing water. Once rooted in, usually from the second season, it withstands drought distinctly better than hybrid tea roses. Nursery stock comes in two forms: plants on their own roots, propagated from cuttings, and cultivars budded onto a rootstock. This determines whether the bud union has to be set below the soil surface and whether suckers emerging beneath it have to be cut out.

Formally a cultivar of the polyantha group, but treated as a ground-cover rose in the trade and in mass planting. Introduced in 1932 in England. Small, pale pink, densely double rosettes in very numerous clusters; it starts flowering later than most roses, usually in July, but carries on until the frosts. About 0.6-0.9 m high by 0.9-1.2 m across.
‘Swany’
Breeder's epithet Meiburenac, raised by Meilland. Pure white, very densely double flowers over glossy foliage. One of the lowest and widest habits in the group: about 0.6 m high with a spread reaching 2 m, so it is too vigorous for a small bed.
‘Flower Carpet Pink’
The trade name of the cultivar Noatraum from the German breeder Noack, sold in Germany as Heidetraum. Semi-double, deep pink flowers with visible stamens and exceptionally glossy, healthy foliage - one of the most widely planted ground-cover roses in Central Europe. About 0.6-0.8 m high by 1-1.2 m across.
‘Max Graf’
A historic cultivar from 1919, a hybrid of the rugosa rose and Rosa wichuraiana. Single, pink flowers with a white centre and yellow stamens - unlike the rest of the group it flowers only once, in early summer. Strongly creeping stems, rooting at the nodes. The frost-hardy Rosa x kordesii line descends from it.
‘Palmengarten Frankfurt’
Raised by Kordes and awarded the German ADR mark, granted after several years of assessment without fungicide protection. Deep pink, semi-double flowers, very healthy foliage, vigorous growth and rapid closing of the cover. About 0.6-0.8 m high; named after the Palmengarten botanical garden in Frankfurt.

Watering

Once rooted in, usually from the second season, it withstands drought distinctly better than hybrid tea roses. In the first year after planting, water infrequently but generously and at the base - on a bank the water runs off the surface, so forming a basin around each plant helps. Do not wet the leaves.

Planting

Before planting, perennial weeds with running roots (couch grass, bindweed, creeping thistle) must be removed without exception - once the prickly cover has closed, they can no longer be picked out. Average, free-draining garden soil; a bark mulch 5-7 cm thick limits weeds until the planting closes up.

Pruning

Each year, pruning to remove dead, broken and diseased stems is enough. Every 2-3 years the shrubs are cut back harder, to 20-30 cm above the ground, to renew the cover and prevent the centre of the clump from becoming bare. Large areas are then cut to a uniform height with hedge shears or a brushcutter.

Timing: Early spring, March, before the buds break. · Caution: They are not cut back every year as short as hybrid tea roses (which are pruned hardest of all, to 3-5 eyes, that is about 10-15 cm). Hard annual cutting back of a ground-cover rose weakens the shrub and delays the closing of the cover, which is the whole reason for planting it.

Diseases and pests

Rose black spot

Black to dark-brown spots with ragged margins on rose leaves, surrounded by yellowing of the leaf blade. Infected leaves drop in large numbers, weakening the plant and reducing flowering. The disease intensifies in wet seasons and where air circulation is poor. The spots are usually round, from a few millimetres to about 1-1.5 cm across, and their most important diagnostic feature is the radially fringed, feathery margin - the mycelium spreads beneath the leaf cuticle in all directions, producing the characteristic 'star-shaped' edge (hence the German name Sternrußtau). Under heavy infection the spots merge into larger, irregular patches, and the surrounding yellowing spreads across more and more of the blade until the whole leaf turns yellow and drops. Small, dark conidial fruiting bodies (acervuli) appear on the upper surface of the spots, while the underside of the leaf remains free of any coating. Symptoms appear first on the lower, oldest leaves and gradually move up the shrub, because the spores are carried by water splashing up from the soil and from lower leaves. Small, purplish-red discolorations and blotches may appear on young, green shoots. Prolonged wetting of the leaves for several hours is required for the spores to germinate and infect, which is why the disease breaks out after warm, rainy spells. Repeated defoliation exhausts the shrub, limits flowering and worsens winter hardiness.

Powdery mildew

A white, powdery coating on leaves, shoots and buds. The leaves turn yellow, become deformed and drop prematurely. The coating develops on both sides of the leaf blade, is often clearly visible from above, and can easily be rubbed off with a finger — it is the superficial mycelium of an ectoparasite that draws nutrients from the epidermal cells by means of feeding structures (haustoria). At first single, round, white spots appear, which in time merge and cover the entire leaf surface and the young growth. Young leaves and the current season's shoots are the most susceptible; heavy infection causes them to pucker, stiffen and stop growing, and on buds it leads to deformation or death of the flowers. On the fruit of some species (gooseberry, apple, cucurbits) the coating leaves russeting or a corky skin. Towards the end of the season, small, dark fruiting bodies (chasmothecia, formerly called cleistothecia) — the pathogen's overwintering structures — appear within the coating. The disease affects many plants, including roses, oak, privet, lilac, cucurbits, cereals, grapevine, apple, gooseberry, phlox and coneflowers, with each of these hosts being infected by a specialised species of fungus.

Rust

Rusty-orange to brown, powdery clusters of spores on the underside of leaves, matched on the upper side by yellow spots. Heavily infected leaves turn yellow and drop prematurely, and the plant weakens. It affects roses and mallows among others, and some rusts have an alternate host (for example pear rust and juniper). The pustules (clusters of summer spores, the so-called uredinia) break through the leaf skin and release an orange-rust powder that rubs off onto the finger - this is the most reliable identifying feature. In high summer they appear mainly on the underside of the blade, along the veins and on the leaf stalks, and in some species also on green shoots and sepals. In late autumn the clusters darken to brownish-black - these are the overwintering spores (telia) by which the fungus survives winter on plant debris. Rusts are highly host-specific: a given rust usually infects only one species or genus of host, which is why the rusts of rose, mallow and marsh mallow, bean, leek and garlic, mint, pelargonium or lawn are different, non-interchangeable fungi. The general symptom - yellowing and premature leaf drop - weakens the plant and limits flowering and yield, though it rarely kills it within a single season.

Aphids

Small (1–3 mm) soft-bodied insects, green, black or pink, feeding in clusters on young shoots and the underside of leaves. They excrete sticky honeydew. The diagnostic feature that distinguishes aphids from other small sucking insects is the pair of siphunculi (tubular projections) at the rear of the abdomen together with a tail-like cauda; a single colony usually holds wingless forms (parthenogenetic females) alongside winged migrants that fly onto new plants in summer. In summer aphids reproduce parthenogenetically and viviparously over many generations, so the population builds up explosively; in autumn many species produce a sexual generation that lays overwintering eggs on the host, and host-alternating species move between a winter host (often a tree or shrub) and a summer host (a herbaceous plant). Feeding symptoms include curling, crinkling and distortion of young leaves, stunted growth, yellowing, and the shedding of buds and fruitlets. Abundant honeydew coats the leaves, and the sooty mould fungus that develops on it forms a black film which limits photosynthesis; the honeydew is fed on by ants, which in return defend the colony against predators. Aphids are also important vectors of plant viruses (mosaics among them), transmitting them from plant to plant even during a brief probing puncture.

Spider mites

Tiny (0.3–0.5 mm) arachnids, hard to spot with the naked eye, feeding on the underside of leaves. Symptoms: fine, pale speckling (feeding punctures); over time the leaves turn grey, yellow and dry out. Under heavy infestation a fine webbing becomes visible. Warm, dry air favours their development — a common problem for houseplants in winter near radiators. Spider mites are not insects but mites of the family Tetranychidae — adults have 8 legs (larvae only 6). The most common in cultivation is the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae): yellowish-green females carry two dark spots on the sides of the body, while overwintering females turn orange-red. In orchards the fruit tree red spider mite (Panonychus ulmi) is frequent, whose red eggs overwinter in clusters on the bark of the shoots. Feeding mechanism: the mites puncture the cells of the epidermis and mesophyll on the underside of the leaf and suck out their contents, and the emptied cells fill with air — hence the characteristic, silvery-grey, fine speckling visible from the upper side of the blade (resembling a mosaic discolouration). At high numbers the leaves turn brown, curl and drop prematurely, and the whole plant weakens and loses its growth. Dense webbing spun between the leaves and shoot tips appears only under an advanced attack and is a sign of the risk of the pest spreading to neighbouring plants. The development cycle is very fast in warmth and drought — at a temperature of 25–30°C a single generation can be completed in 1–2 weeks, hence the numerous generations per season and the rapid, exponential build-up of the population. Females lay spherical, transparent eggs on the underside of the leaves. Fertilised females overwinter (in bark crevices, leaf litter and plant debris) or — in the fruit tree red spider mite — the eggs on the bark. Early infestation is easy to miss; diagnosis is helped by shaking a leaf over a white sheet of paper (moving specks become visible) or examining the underside of the leaf with a magnifying glass.

Sawflies

The larvae strongly resemble the caterpillars of butterflies and moths, but have more pairs of abdominal prolegs (six and more) and single ocelli on the sides of the head, by which they can be told apart. They often feed gregariously, skeletonising the leaves or eating them down to the veins, and can strip a gooseberry or currant bush bare within a few days. The host plants are gooseberry, currant, rose, plum and pine. Symptoms: besides the defoliation of leaves, the larvae of fruit-dwelling species (e.g. on plum) bore into the young fruit set and cause it to drop. Adult sawflies are small (a few millimetres) hymenopterans without a distinct 'wasp waist' — the abdomen is broadly joined to the thorax, which distinguishes them from wasps and bees; the females have a saw-like ovipositor (hence the name 'sawflies'), with which they cut into the tissue of a leaf or fruit set and lay their eggs inside it. The larvae are most often green, matching the colour of the leaf, in some species with dark warts or spots; their prolegs lack the grasping crochets that the caterpillars of moths have, and when disturbed the larvae of many species raise the rear end of the body into a characteristic 'S' shape. The most damaging groups are: the gooseberry sawfly (Nematus ribesii) on gooseberry and currant, stripping the bush from the inside out; the slug sawflies (genus Caliroa) on pear, cherry and plum, whose slimy, slug-like larvae graze away the upper skin of the leaf (windowing), so that the leaf turns brown as if scorched; the fruit sawflies of the genus Hoplocampa on plum and apple, tunnelling galleries into the young fruit set and leaving moist, foul-smelling droppings; and the conifer sawflies (Diprion, Neodiprion) on pine, feeding gregariously on the needles. Life cycle: the adults emerge in spring, the larvae feed for several weeks, after which they descend into the soil or leaf litter, where they pupate in a cocoon and overwinter as a larva (prepupa); depending on the species, 1–3 generations develop in a season.

History and origin

Creeping roses entered gardens with the introduction of Rosa wichuraiana from East Asia at the end of the 19th century. That species became the donor of both the habit and the glossy, healthy foliage for whole breeding lines. The first widely known hybrid of this type was Max Graf from 1919, a cross between the rugosa rose and Rosa wichuraiana, flowering only once in the season. From it Wilhelm Kordes raised, in the 1940s, Rosa x kordesii - a fertile, frost-hardy line on which many later landscape cultivars were based. As a separate commercial category, ground-cover roses took shape only in the second half of the 20th century, along with the demand from municipal landscaping for plants to cover banks, roundabouts and roadside strips - places where annual pruning and regular spraying simply cannot be carried out. The tone was set by the German nurseries Kordes, Noack and Tantau, and by Meilland in France. Foliage health without chemical protection became the key selection criterion. In Germany it is measured by the ADR trial, run since 1950, but only since 1997 have cultivars been assessed in it entirely without fungicide protection - over three years and simultaneously in several independent trial gardens in different parts of the country. That is exactly why the ADR mark on the label is today the most practical guide when choosing a ground-cover rose for a difficult, rarely tended position.

Uses

The principal use is on large, uniform areas where mass effect and low labour input are what count: banks, embankments, planted strips along footpaths, roundabouts, car park edges and front gardens. On a bank the ground-cover rose plays a double role - the dense network of stems and roots limits surface run-off and erosion, while the prickly stems effectively discourage people from taking short cuts across the planting. It is planted densely and straight away at the final spacing: 3 plants per square metre is taken for the more vigorous cultivars and 4-5 for the lowest ones, which corresponds to a spacing of 45-60 cm. Wider spacing lengthens the period during which the soil stays exposed, and on a bank that means extra seasons of weeding. Before planting, perennial weeds with running roots - couch grass, bindweed, creeping thistle - must be removed without exception, because once the cover has closed they can no longer be picked out from among the prickly stems; a bark mulch 5-7 cm thick bridges that period. In a private garden the group works well as an edging to a rose bed, as a filler between taller shrubs, as planting along the top of a retaining wall over which the stems drape attractively, and as a low dividing barrier. It is not suitable, however, for surfaces that are walked on, nor for tight borders with perennials that need dividing every year - every step in among the stems ends in scratches. Good partners are plants with similar requirements and a different texture: catmint, Russian sage, ornamental grasses, stonecrops. The flowers of this group are not cut for the vase - the stalks are too short for that, and the merit here is a block of colour lasting for months, not an individual bloom.

Trivia

  • Roses produce practically no nectar - insects collect only pollen from them. That is why real forage is provided only by single and semi-double cultivars, in which the stamens have not been transformed into petals; a densely double rosette is useless to pollinators.
  • The creeping habit and the glossy foliage of this whole group come largely from a single species - Rosa wichuraiana, which in the wild trails over ground and rocks instead of growing upwards.
  • The trade name of a cultivar is sometimes different from its cultivar epithet: Flower Carpet is a commercial series, and the pink cultivar sold under it is named Noatraum, marketed in Germany as Heidetraum.

How does a ground-cover rose differ from a hybrid tea rose?

They differ in habit, in purpose and above all in pruning. The ground-cover rose has creeping or widely spreading stems and grows wider than it does tall (30-80 cm high by 80-200 cm across), while the hybrid tea rose forms a stiff, upright shrub 0.6-1.5 m tall. The ground-cover rose bears numerous small flowers in clusters and is planted in quantity for a block of colour; the hybrid tea bears single flowers 10-12 cm across on long stalks and is the source of cut flowers. The most important practical difference concerns pruning: the hybrid tea rose is cut back every year harder than any other group, to 3-5 eyes (about 10-15 cm), whereas the ground-cover rose is pruned each year only to remove dead and damaged wood, and cut back harder, to 20-30 cm, just every 2-3 years. When and how should a ground-cover rose be pruned?

The time is early spring, around March, before the buds break - the ground-cover rose flowers on the current year's growth. Each year it is enough to remove dead, broken and diseased stems. Every 2-3 years a renewal pruning is carried out, cutting the whole clump back to 20-30 cm above the ground; on large areas this is done with hedge shears to a uniform height. It should not be cut back every year as short as hybrid tea roses - that weakens the shrub and delays the closing of the cover.

Will a ground-cover rose smother weeds?

Partly, and only once the planting has closed up, which at the recommended spacing usually takes 2-3 seasons. A closed cover effectively limits annual weeds germinating from seed, because it shades the soil. It will not, however, deal with perennial weeds spreading by running roots - couch grass or bindweed will grow up through the planting from below and come out between the stems. This is the commonest mistake when establishing such areas: perennial weeds have to be removed before planting, because hand weeding among prickly stems is practically impossible.

Do ground-cover roses need winter protection?

In most of Poland, well-chosen cultivars overwinter without earthing up - in practice this group is distinctly hardier than hybrid tea roses, which are mounded up every year. It is worth protecting them in the first winter after planting, when the plant has not yet rooted in, and also protecting specimens budded onto a rootstock in regions with the sharpest frosts - a mound of soil 15-20 cm high is then heaped over the bud union and raked away in March. This matters in practice: a shrub on its own roots, killed back to the ground, regrows as the same cultivar, whereas a budded one regrows from the rootstock, that is as a wilding.
